I like this idea, but I'm a million percent biased.:P
when it comes to the question "what is freelancerish" ... i like to refer to art deco / bauhaus design. that is, decoration in detail, and function dominating the form, while still keeping a certain "style".
a good example is the Crysler building:
while being a very functional design, it offers a lot of detail on second glance. the gargoyles at the edges of the roof part of the building, aswell as the classical designed windowshapes, imitating a cathedral.
same goes with freelancer ships.
that shall just show how a rather boring design ( on first glance ) shows quite some detail when you take a closer look. but it doeesn t show dominating decorative parts. most freelancer ships appear to be down to the essential parts, rheinland ships taking to to an extreme, kusari ships offereing more decoration. but most of them have very distinct "bodyparts". the kusari ships ( chimera/dragon) has a main body, seperate thrusters, a fin and the two "wings". but the wings are much more not an essential part of the ship.
compared with the design of the ship in question here, those very big side parts of the chassis appear to have no purpose other than looks, but are dominating the model.
hmm - i wonder if i made myself clear:mellow:....
now, the model is great - IF any faction could have it, it would be a minimal armed civilian ship, imo. it looks more like a racing ship for kids from rich parents. and when its about looks, only civiilians would care for it. i think military much more prefers funcion over form. cause any form without a purpose means more maintenance, more costs for nothing. (unless its a form that scares the enemy)
Coalition Light Fighter? Has the potential to be that if you ask me. I love the model in general aswell, but it doesn't scream Outcast to me. In fact, it doesn't say anything but Civilian, Coalition or a new "Racing" class as previously mentioned, which would be new.
I hope this gets in at 4.85, would be a great new addition along with all the other new tech we have to play with.
@ Jinx: You are particulary right, but as we all know, Freelancer is action not science.
Despite the fact those side parts may work as small fuel tanks and may help to keep stability in atmospheric flights, not every part must have physical functionality. Psychological Warfare. A scary and aggressive design may let think an opponent, it would be better to run, even if he is stronger.
And for Bauhaus style. I think only a few people want to fly a Borg Cube.
I tryied to implement a bit of Bauhaus feeling with my Kusari Transport (functional modular construction).
In my design philosophy a good design polarizes people. Some will hate and some will love it.
Basic Bauhaus design does not polarize. It is just boring.
This will not replace the Scimitar because the Scimitar is the Mk2 Dagger, THAT isn't the Dagger design, so, it won't replace it. -.-
The Outcasts already have a bomber and its a very "Outcast-ish" design.
A "Racing class" ship...? There's already the Slipstream, and if you REALLY want to go fast, buy the Camera ship...
The Civilians already have the Griffin, I'm not sure where it'd fit in... Though the Order could use an LF... Unfortunatly it doesn't quite look " Order" enough. Maybe if you take off the big "wing" bits that stick out in front of it.. And make or adapt an Order "skin" or whatever you call them....
I agree, its hard to place so I'm holding off on that till after I've completed texturing it. It will find its place eventually, I'm sure of that. For now my mind is occupied on what colour scheme to use and what name would fit.
I'll be posting updates as I go, don't worry.
I would appreciate suggestions by everyone so far for what name they think would work please.
