Quote:But there is one thing that many official factions brought to this server that unofficials haven't: an example. The official factions act as a conduit between new players and the discovery community. New players join official factions, slowly get to know the people, get to know the ways in which RP works, get to know the forum... and they soon realise why it's important to be courteous to one another in this online game. Because that's how we all have fun here, not by absolute winning.

100% true. There are some elite factions but a faction should work in this way. Take new players in and guide them rather than keep waiting for experienced players to come by. I was taken in by USI when I most needed them. I am sure factions would do a good job in teaching people.

I just met up with some new guys. They felt that the beginner grind was too difficult to do so. I also feel its way too hard .

Is there anyway we can make the beginner part easier and more interesting perhaps?

I keep getting the feeling many (not all) of these "new" players are just old disgruntled ones, acting like they cannot talk english and blow things up and say. "opsss mee no no you good guy...so me sorrree" Then when you confront them and blow THEM up they somehow regain the copasity to communicate in coherent sentences.

I mean really. No one accidently manages to buy a Zoner Dreadnaught, knowing exactly the wrong commodity that is one of 4 illegal items out of all the others, and sell at the right place. I'm not buying it.

This is how I saw factions because this is how I started. So just bear with me.

I played the vanilla game to the end of '€œFREELANCER.'€ I was a bad ass guy who just saved the universe, stuck it to the man and still I'€™m a freelancer. Yea I help the Order in Liberty, managed to anger factions, help others, be on the wanted list a few placed but you see this? I'€™m still a Awesome Independent Freelancer. No one owns me and I can choose what I want because I answer to me. Period.

I did find out if I wanted to be any active part of Disco, joining a faction was the way to be. If it failed, I could always go back to being a freelancer and try again. Then I had a choice, contineu to be a freelancer or be part of a faction. The Idea of having their ships, their ID their equiptment and -not- being part of their faction was like poking them in the eye, to say nothing about being placed on a wanted posted. If you're IFF pointed to a faction, that faction kindly asked you to either consider joining them or change that IFF. They didnt want the risk of you messing up their name. Then factions started breaking into sub factions. Thes sub factions would work hand in hand with their parent faction or die out due to player disintrest and be reabsorbed into the parent faction or just join another existing faction.

Now what is happening are people get any stuff from a faction, work with them when it suits them make money breaking every law in the book until they are caught. The Factions smile and laugh and say "They not us, they Indys" The Indy lolwut populations grow because the factions that once encourages players to join them officially or change that IFF please, now say, eh, doesn't bother me.

Factions that overtly ignore a problem that their faction indirectly and in some cases, directly encourages, only makes the problem worse. It's got a LOT to do with the factions. Because the faction no longer cares what a group of their INDys do because hey, that's not us. Apathy is no excuse. The answer I get is, "We can't control every independent that does X to Y" My answer is, "You did, then you stopped because you wanted to "encourage" players, those players went halfway and stopped. They have no encouragement or incentive to follow through now. They are Freelancers with faction stuff and no repsponsibility to answer to anyone.

If that what is takes to be a faction or try to join one, Why would I bother? These noobs learn from what is happening right now. If the existing factions don't care, why would they? We were all noobs once but we had rules and factions that cared about their faction. We learned there are defined lines that shouldn't be crossed and real limits when you choose a faction. We dealt with it and made it our RP.

Players leave factions and factions die because Roleplay is pointless. Now, it all comes down to which battleship will the noob choose to kill my transport today?

Really? How about you start using less words that has negative meaning on the whole of independent players, who can actually have 50/50 character spread among independent and official factions.

What kind of factions do you mean?

Do you mean official factions or the NPC factions themselves?

There are plently enough people for the current official factions.

It's much like corporate competition really, the most popular ones are the largest.

[LN], etc.

Not every NPC factions needs nor deserves an official faction.

The time wasted in police factions for example could be going to other things.

Police factions should, IMHO, be turned into "Civillian" Factions to apply to all of those planets that really nobody owns.

Then the Navy would exist and life would be fine.

The little used pirate factions (Unioners, Bundshuh, Farmers, Blood Dragons , Gaians, etc)

are a problem... however.

That's more like it.

Yep ,
for a long time official factions got discouraged from take care of their indies.
I do think (and hope) this is reaching a turning point now though.

I guess Snak3, You just couldn't wait for -me- to say something so you can start making direct personal attacks at me while ignoring a term used by others as well. I guess someone using it once is ok but not those terms five times. I'll try to cut it down to four next time and my point stands you lolwut. Try addressing the argument next time.

Sorry to drag you into this Ursus.

To reiterate what I said earlier, factions are (on a general level) lacking legitimacy. I fail to see how that can be won by factions deliberately putting themselves in opposition to the indy community at large, with excluding notions of "factions taking care of indies" etc.

You are going about it the wrong way: Instead of praising factions and patronizing those who choose to play as independents, try think of ways to use your given power and self-proclaimed responsible conduct (and other virtues) to include indies better.
