BHG Gunship or Destroyer?

I have always wanted to fly a capital class, or just a bigger ship. I have 'finally' managed to get enough money for a BHG Gunship after using my new trader a lot.

Is it worth buying the gunship or should I continue to save for a Destroyer. Oh and is there a restriction? Because I have been putting a heavy amount of RP into my Slater character. If there is a restriction who do I talk to within the BHG factions?

Thanks for reading.

Well, in the end I suppose it depends on what you want to express with the ship.

But let's strip aside the RP and go with the barebones.

The BH Dessy is the weakest of the cruiser class vessels. She's pretty small, but not so small that it actually matters in the scheme of things. Supposedly she excels in the role of long range artillery support, but for the solo bounty hunter that rarely comes into play.

The BHPwnship is also the weakest of the Gunboat class vessels. Unarmored her hull will buckle under fire from a single supernova and her cargo capacity is so low as to prevent anything but a cap VIII enhancement. A standard armor VIII will allow you to survive a supernova. That being said, she's very very small and it -does- matter. She turns like a bandit and in the right hands can take on everything from fighters to battlecruisers single handed. On top of being the smallest of the gunboats, her shield bubble/hitbox is even smaller than the model itself and most bombers will need to be right in your face to hope to score a shot.

Essentially, the BH Gunship is an ultra powerful fighter with a turn speed better than some bombers. She's an evil evil ship. But the destroyer looks cooler.

This is coming from a fellow who doesn't fly them, but fights them on a regular basis. Also! Remember that some house governments, such as Liberty, frown on cruisers entering their space.

There are two official BH factions - Darkwing and the SSO. I may be wrong but the latter is inactive and the former is currently involved in a slugging match against the Junkers in Omega 15 for heavens know why.

There is (gasp!) no one placing any restrictions on the use of the BHer capital ships other than the mature and responsible restrictions people such as me and your good self impose on ourselves, and no register as such specifically for the capships. Generally speaking, expect some people to make snide comments about you in game if you start acting like Buzz Lightyear and cleanse the trade lanes of every bad guy you encounter, but no BHers are gonna come looking for you to demand you sign Form 123482734987X. Nor have any of the unofficial BH groups (the Core, the S/D (me!)) ever hinted that this is something we would even contemplate, let alone be capable of or even want to do. We are all members of the same Guild after all.

From what I've heard the Destroyer is quite disappointing. You may as well save some more and go for the battlecruiser (but yes you know what happens then - people accuse you of a wrongdoing which would make Hitler blush).

If you haven't flown one then certainly try out the gunship. It is agile, well armed and looks likely to get nerfed next version so enjoy it while it's there. It is by no means invulnerable despite what many say so have a wingman (fighter preferably) but it does allow you the freedom to range both in the Lonelicrons and House systems without too much hassle. You'll grow to love the old feller like a faithful dog.

Do that in anything larger than an Orca and people will think you are the Devil incarnate.

Hmm, so flying to Destroyer is out of the question then. I don't want to waste credits. The 'pwnship', man this could be annoying. I still want to fly within Liberty, but being in that ship could make things complicated and I'd probably be branded as a capwhore for flying the pwnship.

Sigh, alternatives?

EDIT: I forgot about the Orca, but I have flown it in SP, I hate the look of the thing, it looks like in shape a Hydro Thunder boat reject. I'll fly it for the firepower, but I'll grow to hate the texture...

Just a note, the BHG GS is night-unhittable. Me and Jamez took one on in Conn...We never did manage to take down the shields, and we both lost all bots/batts and suicided.

The cruiser is easier to nuke. the 522nd, with aid from two Harvesters, managed to down two BHG BS and one BHG Dessie... Only lost one Harvester.

The Orca is dissapointing, but can get the job done.

Destroyer is dissapointing and restricts your access to some house systems.

Battlecruiser carries a stigma and restricts your access to some house systems, though is a nice ship by most accounts.

If you want a capable capital class shooter, go with the gunship. It's a really really nice mover and'll get the job done.

You're not going to get many folks suggesting the BH Gunship, for obvious reasons. Heck, I don't even make use of my Junker's "repurposed" BH Gunship, as it's too much trouble, despite the extremely limited role I intended it to play; rapid response defense of Junker stations, against Xeno attacks, for example. Seems rather cheap. Though, all gunships should be like the BH Gunship, if you ask me; small, somewhat larger than a bomber with slightly less agility, and all should have hull nerfs and fewer weapon slots, or a mix of 6 C5 and C8 turrets, perhaps 3/3. Gunship shields should also be less powerful, say, 80k. Or, separate shields for "Gunships" (80k) and "Gunboats" (120k). If clarification is needed, think of gunships as the AH-64 Apache, and the Gunboat as the AC-130 Spectre.

That aside, I'd work my way up to a BH Dest, in anticipation of the new mod version. As things usually go, the BH Gunship will likely be nerfed far beyond unplayable, given its reputation.

I disagree that it is nigh-unhittable and I have the scars to prove it. It is, however a cagey opponenet for fighters and bombers to deal with. When it does get hit it folds real quick. The key to using it is to make sure you don't get caught by more than one enemy. If you get into a situation where you're alone against two ships and one is a bomber then you will be hard pressed to get out with your life unless you nail the bomber and quick.

It's a great all rounder especially if you like to work alone. The difficulty then presents itself in the loadout - you can go anti fighter or anti cap; it's hard to have both.

If you heeded all the complaints about the equipment available to BHers and did what people wanted you'd be mincing around Liberty in a barracuda trying to collect on bounties using persuasion, so take the complaints with a pinch of salt.

I've met you in space and I don't think anyone could fault your RP (from what I've seen anyway). You can RP to back up the building of it - we're not getting our next big ship until we get some trader to supply the materials for the Guild to actually build the thing. It's made in Newcastle and they're supposed to be old stock.

Jinx's new designs for the BHG ship line are worth looking at before you decide.

//edit: The Orca forward gun is useless, hence you don't see it around often.

I vote Manta. Wait, its not an option? OK then..

I dont like the BH Dessy. I once had a duel with one in the Guiztizia (if youre wondering what kind of ship she is, stare at my sig), and didn't lose my shields once, despite him having an Inferno and Light Mortar. Saw one come into Alpha today, and it folded pretty fast. I was in a Templar with six Krakens, and I swear I could see the red bar drop each shot:)

I think Fletcher has already tried out the Manta and the Hammerhead; it is nice to explore using the larger ships, it does change your approach to the game. Plus it's not much fun in a Manta in the Nomad systems....not much fun at all.....
