Now for my personal opinion:
I really like this guy (all the videos are posted by the same account) he seems to be dedicated and able to make some good stuff with the freelancer platform.
In the first video I like the oversized Rhino idea, it seems much more suitable than our regular Navy GB. Of course the engines, lightning and textures look much crisper than in game, but that is not a problem (swag pack can do that).
I like the engines in the second video, not really sure if such maneuverability would be balanced in disco's environment.
The third video presents some nice explosion FX, eye candy.
And then in the last video you can see an actual beam weapons in FL, never really seen such a good one.
What do you guys think? Shouldn't an admin or mod contact this guy and maybe hire him for Disco?

the realistic explosions are easily possible - but disco has chosen to use a simpler effect, - and even that causes problems to fluency and framerates in larger battles.
the capital ship movement is nice, but as long as snubs are arcade style, we don t want to make capital ships simulation style - thats near impossible to balance.
the beam weapons - from what i remember - was three turrets stacked on one place. one playing the sound and freespace 2 chargeup effect, the other 2 were creating the beam. - this kind of beam would kill the server though, because it consists of numerous elements at high speeds. - and while it is nice to look at and a neat little "what you can do" - demo... it is impractical for disco.
we are introducing beams in 87 - but we use a different method. - not continous beams ( cause impractical ) but flash beams.
the footage from the unity engine is really beautiful - but a few ships flying in space is not even close to a game. - 10% of the game is graphics and stuff - the rest is coding and internal mechanics and interconnected events. - porting models to a new engine - unity, unreal 3 or wahtever is useless if you cannot port the game mechanics, too. - but yea - looks pretty for a you tube demo.
I would still like to see our Liberty Gunboat exchanged with something more potent looking, its just silly, its not intimidating at all... That oversized rhino with those 2 weapons on top looks epic, I guess a dev could create something like that.

How much experience with Wine do you have?
iI think he meant Unity Game Engine, not the Ubuntu Unity http://unity3d.com/
