Don't worry they are fixing the Sarissa in 4.87 and making it smaller; but yes as it is it is terrible for PVP.

If I was you, I'd go for a cruiser*. They have cruise disruptors so you can go solo and stop ships you want to shoot at. Also turret steering is a bit messed up, it is fairly easy to have success in a cruiser by just punching random direction keys in turret view, while still being able to hit due to auto-aim. IMO Cruisers are a lot easier than Battleships (in which you have to be very good at what you are doing, have a fleet to support you or fight imbeciles) to pilot successfully if you know the basics of your ship/guns (stuff like turret placement and arcs, range on guns etc.) and the basics of PVP (e.g. dodging > tanking).

*For pirating, I'd go for an Outcast ID Storta; if just random pews I would go for a Colonial ID Thanatos, BHG Core ID Thresher, Rheinland Cruiser or maybe a Liberty Battlecruiser.
