Can the GMG salvage, repair and use Rheinland capital ships that have been "left" in Sigma-13 after the 80 years war?

the GMG hired ALG to clean up the mess, so I highly doubt it. Plus... those ships are very, very old, and have been adrift in space left to rust for a very long time.

Considering that the GMG and rheinland are supposed to be enemies still, I think it'd be out of RP for them to use rheinland ships.

Those ships have plenty of holes in them, virtually all their circuitry is fried and burned and centuries out of date, they probably aren't compatible with modern weaponry anymore, the control system probably changed from the Rheinland Imperial Navy to the newer Kriegsmarine, etc. ad infinitum.

The impracticality of salvaging them for anything but spare parts and museums is astounding. Theoretically its doable, but I advise talking to the leaders of the Rheinland Military to make sure if you do it you have the facts straight... like, for instance, knowing that almost all of those ships are the old Imperial Navy precursors to the Valkyrie and not modern Wraths. Remarkable how many people think that modern stuff just floats there.

As for the stuff the Nomad-infested fleet left behind, that got top priority from a very unhappy Federal Republic of Rheinland after the war, it is insanely unlikely any of it got missed (modern transponders with working codes and all that) between the Blood Dragons checking for survivors, the Junkers looking for newer spare parts, and ALG working as fast as they could so the feds would back off their shoulders. Still, it is possible, just make sure you clear the backstory with people familiar with its history to avoid any nasty inconsistencies.

err rust needs oxygen..... its space, so no oxygen, no oxygen, no rust.

However I'm sure you've noticed the large amounts of Radiation in that system, the long term exposure to the radiation would most likely have caused the metals that make up the ship to decay. Oh and they would probably kill or sterilize any one who attempted to fix it.

well technically we dont know what effects h-fuel have on exposed metal for prolonged periods of time. The radiation is also a factor, as you mentioned - as is the presence of explosive pockets of gas that could damage the ships even further during salvaging operations.

That's what I thought. Highly unlikely, best not to do it stamp.

and like Sovereign said the ships probably have more holes in them then I lawyers heart...

Besides you'd have to replace every system on board and you'd most likely only get one, maybe two working again. What you would do if you where gonna salvage them it would probably take half a dozen or more wrecks to get one working ship.

I could see you using a Rheinland cap ship with half the guns and armor of a fully equiped one. Maybe tie the RP of getting the ship in with the Junkers who go where ALG is afraid to.

Maybe limit it to cap armor 5 or 6 but not top notch with out good reason. Or you may just salvage the hulk to save from haveing to build a Rhinland criuser from the ground up. So, maybe if you got one; in addition to RP, limit cap armor to 5 or 6 and dont have any Rhineland guns on it, get GMG guns on it.

The reason why I mention cap armor and not regular it the cargo hold should be crippled a little due to bulky replacement gear that is jurry rigged into place.

I'd say yes if one finds some RP limitations as it should not be able to go toe to toe with the "real McCoy" and pwn but, likely smack down a gunboat.

of course with the right story and contacts, there are always exceptions.

I'd say it's extremely unfeasible, GMG are gas miners. Not shipbuilders and engineers.

Besides, the question is not whether they can do it but why would they do it? They are a corporation, they don't need warships... and even if they got into a war (which is not going to happen), the 80 years war demonstrated they can be far more destructive with guerilla tactics and small fighter craft than the largest navy in Sirius. Their primary purpose is gas mining, escorting and exploration. They can use their own fighters and bombers, and sanctioned kusari explorers. They don't need other stuff, hence a refurbishing project like that makes no sense.
