I just got my $200 college pass bonus for passing the first year :yahoo: Now most of you may have seen me complaining and whinging about my computers utter useless components.

I am thinking of purchasing the three following items:
  • CHAINTECH GSE85GT 512MB GeForce 8500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card - Retail - Link to item
  • pqi POWER Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail - Link to item
  • AMD Athlon X2 4450e 2.3GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 45W 65nm Dual-Core Processor - Retail - Link to item
This will add up to $181.97. I do however have a concern, can my Motherboard handle the new Processor and the new Graphics card? I currently know that my motherboard is able to handle the Ram cards with its PC 2700 slots.

I have an AMD ~1.7Ghz processor, so I am hoping that the motherboard is able to take the new processor. If people are able to shave some money off with better items primed towards budget gaming I'd be happy, I do however want a dual core for I like to multitask.

My current motherboard according to Crucial Memory is a Maxdata K7M-400 Motherboard.

If I have to I may be able to squeeze out another $120 from my friend who owes me money, but that would be harsh:(

I can't find your motherboard specs. Get CPU-z and run it, and post a screenshot, willya?

I'd then be able to look at it and give a halfway-decent bit of advice.

the 8500gt is overpriced, and a crappy card.

This card is cheaper and slightly faster than the 8600gt, and is the one i will be getting soon. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814102755

The ram and cpu are fine.

This one is better still, and not too badly priced either.

I don't think that will work. As Boss said you need your mobo specs to see what you can out on it and what not.

Maybe it's an AGP one, maybe it has DDR2 ram, maybe it i not suited for AM2 socket....

Its barely better, and almost 3 times as expenisve.

http://www.techspot.com/review/66-radeon-h...eforce-8600gts/

But yeah, find out if you have a pci express slot

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/comm...px-AGP_slot.jpg

Top one is agp, bottom 2 are PCI

http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/...gigabyte4-8.jpg

Orange and blue are both pci -e

Also, if your going to spend $100 on a gfx card, this will beat both combined. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...82E16814121229R

Really need to see your MoBo specs as well as what size power supply you have as the new CPU and GFX card will use more power. Also heat will be a concern with the better processor and GFX card. So if you can you might look into a new CPU fan and heat sink as well as more case fans if your case has spots for them.

Specs on mobo:

K7M 400
The K7M-400 is an AMD solution motherboard based on the VIA's KM400 Chipset. With support for 333MHz FSB, Dual Channel DDR 400 memory up to 2GB, and 8X AGP, the K7M-400A has all the power and performance mainstream users need. Also included is the flexibility and expansion of 6 USB 2.0 ports, 3 PCI slots, 1 AGP slot, and 2 IEEE 1394 ports.

Special Features
Athlon (Thunderbird core) processor up to 1400+ 200 / 266 / 333 MHz FSB
AC' 97 codec 5.1 Channel, Realtek ALC650 VIA KM400 Chipset
Support DDR 266/333/400 DDR SDRAM 3 x PCI , 1 x AGP 8X slot

I strongly advise to spend an additional 50~60$ on a new Mobo that works better with your new components... Its hard to find a decent AGP card while there are plenty PCI-Ex cards.. Also your memory will become cheaper, since a new mobo will support the mass-produced DDRII

Well then, you have two options, get a AGP card and stick with your current processor, or buy a new motherboard.

Heres a nice cheap motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813130188

RAM for it
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231098

Also, the processor he chose uses only 45 watts, so thats not bad at all.

All right, I found my old CPUID program on my USB pen, here is the htm dump of the scan it did.

I hope that sheds some light.:)
