Hey, I really want to make some models.
What programs do people use? What tips are there? What's the best way to start out?
I've got some basic modelling experience.

I use SketchUp 2013. It's very easy to learn, definitely the right tool for beginners.

Do not use sketchup, it isn't a good tool for beginners, it will be much harder when you try to move on to more advanced programs. 3ds Max, Gmax, and I use Maya 2013. Anyone one of those will really help you understand working in a 3d space.

Ok, it might be just me, but so far I haven't exactly felt the NEED to move on to more "advanced" programs. I can pretty much do in SketchUp whatever crosses my mind. Of course, I'm not exactly a pro, so it might be just that.

Sketchup becomes much more capable of doing high level stuff with a number of freely available addons written for it. Personally I use it for most standard modeling and 3ds max for whatever it can't handle. As far as texture work goes, Max is pretty much unbeatable.

Ultimately it really depends on what you want to do. Sketchup if you want to jump straight into things and be kind of neutered when learning more advanced programs, or a very slow start with 3ds max.

If you're on the fence about obtaining a copy of max, Blender is equally capable but in my opinion much harder to learn. I wouldn't really recommend any other programs, as compared to Max they'll all fall short in one area or another.
