Hey how about we remove the polling option on the forum?

Everyone with a slight insight into quantitative methodology* are aware that the polls on this site will tell you absolutely nothing at best, and in some cases polls will provide people with a false sense of justification/majority; which in turn leads to excessive whining about engine colors and battleship scanners etc.

They do more harm than good, in other words.

*Obviously the poll cannot be said to be representative, forum users are the target population in matters regarding users of the server in general; we're only 20-30 active posters (of which half probably don't even play), and we mostly participate in the poll when we personally have something at stake. In objective terms the polls are near worthless, but it gives people a false idea that they are part of some sort of majority movement when we cannot know whether or not that is the case, and that leads to these people getting butthurt when things don't go their way because they truly believe that they are the majority.

It still helps to get there general view, heh.
No need to remove it, imho.

But what I am trying to say is that "the general view" - qua methodology - cannot be said to be "general" - it instills a false perception of a general view, and that false perception becomes an issue in itself.

But since when the views of the general public were taken into account in the first place?
Apart from the one moment a few days back.

Get your hands off my polls.
On a serious note, I feel they're a necessity as they prevent people from instantly pulling the bs card and saying that a suggestion or discussion is only being fueled/agreed by 'those with the strongest opinions'.

I think that admins and devs listen quite a lot (listening =/= agreeing). I know I argued about a lot of stuff over the years, and some of those things have been changed later on - I like to believe that that happened because the community had discussions regarding it.

What I don't like is people making a poll regarding purple engines and then hammering admins over the head because 92% of the folks participating in that poll said they wanted purple engines. The polls are a tool for manipulation, and they cause discord - on a false premise.

EDIT: But Lyth, the polls prove nothing. You can say the poll is fuelled/agreed by those who use the forum, those who already have a set opinion and want to push things their way etc. etc. Common sense is a far better counter to sketchy data than more sketchy data.

I say limit polls to Admin and Dev use only. If they WANT the community's opinions....they should be the ones asking for it. (and they've provided threads to hear suggestions, otherwise.)

How would this work regarding other topics not related to mod development and the it's features, like RP events and so on?

If it's about getting a number of interested participants for an event, you can simply just ask people to leave a post in the thread noting their interest etc.

Maybe if ( Not saying that Dev/Admins are not doing a good job) But how about if they are going to omplements a major change, like say the Phantoms returning, or the base thing? They post a poll about it and People vote and based on the votes depends on the change? I mean its a Democratic style yes, but it would atleast give them the backing of " We hey, We didnt Decide, You did"

Sent me a Comm? Haven't received a reply in a reasonable time span? Sorry! Post here and I'll get back to you asap!
