The old admiral sat in his office over viewing the biographical file of an experienced Lieutenant who he had ordered to come to his office today. The file on his screen read.
Lieutenant Dwayne Stanley Biographical file....
Age - 35
Birthplace - Manhattan - New York...
The Admiral looked up as a man wearing a Navy Uniform walked up to him, he deftly blanked the computer terminal he was on.
"Ah Lieutenant i trust your flight went well?" the Admiral's tone was business like and the middle aged man standing before him simply replied "Very well sir." There was a bustling of activity around the Norfolk shipyards today. the LNS Mississippi was making port for a major overhaul of the ships combat systems. Scant attention was paid to the much smaller ship docked on the other side of the shipyards. "Come with me Lieutenant i have something to show you." He said walking out of his office at a brisk pace.
They rapidly walked down a small corridor, in the base of the shipyards. Ahead lied where they serviced the old type of ship which was slowly being decommissioned in favor of the cruiser class ships. The gunboats, they come to a stop at observation port 137. There lied a small ship dwarfed by the much larger vessels on the much larger bays above it. It was scarred by what looked like years of asteroids hitting the hull. The Liberty crest on the side of the ship was faded and the entire ship its self looked like it had seen better days. In Paled letters on the side of the ship the name was not fully distinguishable. From what could be deciphered it said O*TRI**R. There were technicians in EVA suits respraying the hull, and others patching the larger dents that had been caused by a long period of time in mothball. "What are we doing here sir?" asked the younger man who had followed the flag officer down through the long winding corridors. "Were looking at your ship Lieutenant Commander, its an old one but it seems that once it is refitted it will serve its purpose well. I want you in my office at 10:00 SLT for your briefing." With that he turned and left the young man stunned near the airlock.
The Outrider was being fitted with newer sensors. Newer combat systems and the shields were being strengthened. The old ship had been completely stripped out and now featured a newer more powerful sensor array and much more advanced computer systems.
On the bridge stood a young man, his black hair was cut short. His brown eyes showed the look of concern, he looked like a man who was a little out of his depth. "Stephen," someone called through the ships com system, "can you get down here and give us a hand?" He moved quickly through the small corridors of the ship until he came to the engine bay. Pipes were leaking to the left of him. The deck crew had left the scene quickly as the pipe was flammable. "Whats the problem sir?" he asked Stanley. Who turned around and looked at him. "What do you think the problem is? We got a flammable pipe leaking here, damned ancient technology." He stopped for a second as the leak grew steadily larger. "Get Norfolk on the comms tell them to release the docking clamps." He then started hitting manual overrides on the computer to allow firing of the maneuvering thrusters.
Stephen ran back to the bridge, which was still the only place with ship to ship communications. He flicked a few switches to hail the Norfolk Shipyard. A business like voice answered, "This is Norfolk Shipyard, state your intentions." Warning lights now began flashing on the tactical display. The temperature near the leak was reaching dangerous levels. "Norfolk this is the Outrider release docking clamps." There were several hydraulic noises as the clamps were retracted. Stephen opened the comms to the engine room, however the commander had already started moving the ship out using the maneuvering thrusters.
