Hm... you prefer to buy it? Err... Isn't it shareware already?

EDIT: Well, I have no idea, so I'm asking too... If it's not... then I may be playin it a little *cough*illegal*cough*... *Quickly deletes his Freespace 2*

I wrote a really funny FL story, but it disappeared when the old forum went away. So, no lulz for you today.

The source code to FreeSpace 2 was actually released some time ago and was adopted by a community of open source programmers and is now in a state of development and enhancement to bring it on par with the current standard of games.

Source Code Project

FreeSpace Open Installer

Now I may be off on a few points, its been sometime since I last investigated FS2 but those links should give you the general idea.

It should just be a matter of running the Java executable and allowing it internet access to download the game resources :S

I tried, I ran it (and I have cable internet so its always connected 24/7) and I even told it where to put the files. But once it gets to the laast screen where it downloads and installes it but it just sat there like a stick in the mud. Any other ideas?

Edit: oh, I didnt tell it to run as Admin, that ruins everything on Vista

I'd say that might have been your issue, I'd suggest attempting it again.

Couldn't find "M"'s CD install. And had no dice with the windows installer. Im now registering with their forum so I can ask the experts.
