Although I've never seen conclusive evidence that POB's cause lag, there seems to be a frowning upon newer players wanting to have POB's. At least, I've never seen or heard it from an Admin that POB's are the problem. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

However, after thinking about it, I questioned the few main reasons for players to want their own base. Mainly it seems they are wanted to keep specialty items on, and swap equipment from ship to ship easily. I'm sure there are a few other motives as well. Don't get me wrong, I know many players build them up to use their construction mods for things like cloaks and JD's. That's all fine and dandy.

Has anyone ever thought of placing 2 or 3 strategically placed 'public' POB's around? Give out a public password and make them available to everyone! Restrict it to Core 1 with maybe a storage module and no requirements for supply or damage. Make it a fixture.

All someone would have to do is come on the forum and register for a PW, get it from a friend, put it in the infocard even. This would let a lot of people get some of the benefits of POB's without needing to go through the process of constructing one themselves. Especially if they just want it for gear swaps or fuel storage. Keep a ship on the base, like a transport. The size you need depends on your requirement. You could keep whatever you want on that transport (which would be like your own storage). For those of you simply collecting items, just dump it on the base, buy it with your storage transport. It will be there if you ever need to go get it. This would also work well for fuel storage. For equipment, you'd just have to take your 2 ships you want to trade up [armor/thruster/scanner-etc] to the base in question, do your business, and go.

So I'm not sure how many would be good. Maybe like 2 lawful and 2 unlawful bases? With the hope that those 4 would reduce the number of independent bases by more than that. Or at least stem the rate of new bases for those that simply only need to use one every so often.

Even just 1 base like this, maybe placed outside Planet Erie in Penn would suffice. Personally I'd like to keep them inrp, but if they had to be op, it would still serve a good purpose I think.

I've put a poll in to make a show of support, or not, easy peasy.

I know there are probably pitfalls and possible abuses to deal with, so please, thoughts???

I think it is a good idea. However, server rules should be established to prevent abuse (like this: someone is camping the base waiting for a player to swap an armor/JD/cloak, and snitchs the equipment while the player in question switched ships). Also, what about the money on the base? It can also be zeroed, making trade impossible. Or all prices would be set to 1, and you'd dump a few credits if the base is on zero?

You said it would be in Penn, at Eire. That would be hard to access for a Gallic character for example. I suggest there should be one base in each house, plus one in the Omicrons/Omegas (for Corsairs, Order, etc). I think they could be placed in an area where both lawfuls and unlawfuls could access it. I think it should be kept ooRP, as an equipment swap point or temporary storage.

If the base would only serve as an equipment swap point, it could be put into Conn.

We did that with Wallace Metal Productions, actually. It was open to dock on, anyone buying a cloak from me and Raul would have their money placed on that base and told, that all the mats would buy for 4000ish credits per unit and the more they brought, the more money they got back from their purchase. And it meant that we did not have to supply the thing at all, since it turned into a known trade route.

I agree, maybe it can be set so that one person at a time can log in. If someone logs in and forgets to log out or won't, they can be kicked after like 10 mins like base idling.

Also for the money, it would be on the responsibility of the player to use their own cash. So you could leave the bank at 0. You'd dump your own cash on for transactions of buying or selling to the base. For the most part you'd never need more than 5000 creds to use for this, so wouldn't risk losing much, just 0 the bank again when you're done.

I was also thinking it might work to add a simple core 1 appendix to every freeport. Then maybe 1 in Gallia as well. Make most of them Zoner. I'd prefer to see them inrp as much as possible, as it would make switching gear less OP, and putting it in Conn would prevent it from being used as a cargo swap point. They could be considered existing NPC base extentions. Place them only where there are bases already so they don't affect the balance in the areas they are in. That way they won't be used to escape fights, any more than NPC bases already are.

Good suggestion. All for bases that bring people together, probably a Freelancer base for its near-universal docking availability - though if you could get admin approval, maybe even a true Neutral affiliation.

I'll think of some more, but one quick concern I had - if using a base to swap equipment, like jump drives, how would one go about the transaction? Unless it's handled exclusively by trusted base administrators, I can see shifty people camping on the base and snatching up equipment as soon as they see it for sale.

I dont think its a good idea.

People store fuel on it? Ok so the others just come and take it, hows that supposed to work?

Same with money and equipment.

Whats the actual point of it?

You suggested it could even work oorp, which means your suggesting something that could LESSEN the rp on the server. Why?

Or, people could just contact base administrators of existant stations and cooperate to build themselves stuff, transfer equipment or store codenames.

MULTIPLAYER.

You would use the base as a transit point only, not long term storage. The 'storage' would be what you keep in ships docked at the base. Keep a train filled with what you need there, and only put it on the base to take it back with another ship right away. If you need fuel, you keep it on one of these transports. Once you sell what you need from that ship, just immediately switch to your target ship, and buy it up. As long as you don't dilly dally, you are probably ok. If you don't feel comfortable using them for your CAU8's or BS scanners, then you can go request to use another POB perhaps. For lower level activities, they would work just fine. All I know is, in the past if these existed, I'd have probably not bothered with my own bases.

And actually I suggested they be inrp and make most of them extensions to Zoner freeports (with an exception for Gallia).

My base was open dock to most lawful factions, and was used as a storage transfer point for the Council, and a transfer point for ores going between Liberty and Bretonia.
