I'm basically setting up a computer for someone. I kind of want to keep the cost of what I'm splashing out on this low, so I'm looking to cut costs in the software/OS area.

So, pretty much I need a free OS that fits this specification:
  • User friendly.
  • Secure. Keeps banking details safe
  • To be usable for basic working (opening documents etc.)
  • Free, or very cheap

Does anyone have any suggestions?

if microsoft office is not required you could go with Mint http://www.linuxmint.com/ or Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/ both are really easy to install and use

Yes, try Mint or Ubuntu. Mint is friendlier to someone who previously used Windows cuz to its interface.

You could use LibreOffice or OpenOffice, both open-source office suites like MS Office

The OP is looking for an OS, not an MSoffice-like program.

As has been mentioned already, Ubuntu could be the way to go for you.

I don't use Linux myself, but I have heard/read a lot of nice things about Ubuntu.

A possibly very ordinary signature coming soon.

I originally suggested Linux because there's many distro's to choose from, and was merely responding to another poster's reply :| If he didnt like Ubuntu he could go with Fedora or OpenSUSE as well.

Is it literally just a desktop computer? Will he have any other needs other than those you've mentioned?

Win7 ain't expensive.
