MS did this space sim some years ago called Allegiance. Its multiplayer and the two teams fight over a star system map. The game ends when one team captures all the other teams star systems. Each player can fly any ship he chooses, from piloting fighters, torpedo bombers and also flying a capital ship -- or going in one of the cap ships turrets !!!!

(i really like the turrets idea).

yea its very fast paced, very dogfight oriented uses joystick. Most uniquely, each side gets to appoint a sort of General who controls the disposition of forces. You can either accept his orders, do your own thing, or vote his removal (!) lol thats funny.

the game community is very strong. MS started the game, dumped it, and like FL, the community took it up and now its a very strong multiplayer space fighting game. It's a complex game to learn though -- so whether you fly a fighter, bomber, cap ship, or be the general, theres a lot to learn to try to win. Buuut.. gfx a bit dated but still Very Very good by my standards- they are working on upgrading it.

anyone tried this game yet?

(i tried it -- its probably the toughest most intense fighting space sim i know. Starlancer is kinda laid back and jokey. Freespace is pretty intense. But Allegiance is nuts to the wall dogfighting and it really gets you when your side's capships gets blown to tiny pieces)

Never heard or seen this game before, I'll look into the Wiki page. I wouldn't mind trying an old game on my old PC.

EDIT: I love the description in this game, and ITS FREE!! Please give me the link to the community website and the download site, I love the game in the Wiki page. Seems like a mix of Battlefield 2 and Freelancer in a way... Sweet!

heh:)glad you guys are interested

i did forget to mention its free (!) MS made it a sort of open source i think -- so there is hope for FL (!) the story goes that Allegiance was such a groundbreaking game back in the early 2000s that it flew over the heads of everyone. So MS seeing its long term potential just gave it to the community. (i think pls correct if my meory is wrong).

Communicty site :-
http://www.freeallegiance.org/

the people there are lovely. they have a cadet training programme where new players are mentored by experienced players for a month or 2. (i never did the programme but i loved sitting in turrets. i hated flying the fighters cos -- i kept dying:()

(do come back and tell me what you think of it -- i would love to discuss it with fellow freelancer pilots)

edit : yes i also forgot to mention its only 70 megs!! but everything is there in the game, starfields, detailed ships, weapons, cockpits, ready rooms, front splash screen, command thingies etc etc custom maps... buuut.. i still prefer freelancer cos -- ah.. i like the long trade trips and fun fights, more easy pace. (ps i suspect the 70 megs is a heavily compressed file. if my memory is right)

EDIT: Watch for Wyvern.

Man o man this game is surprisingly hard... 2 days and only 6 kills to my name, been commander twice and failed badly. This game NEEDS planning and has a big learning curve.

I only recommend to those willing to put A LOT of time into it for any fun and joy.

yes i found it real hard too.. all the existing players know a lot about pulling good dogfight maneuvers (because they all went through training so they wont suck like me).

hence i went and tried out tiurrets - its easier but still hard. i had some memorable occasions where our cruiser was th elast line of defence and they sent in their cruiser and from far away we could see streaming lines of fire cross space to reach for our ship and behind them the silver sparkling glow of the enmy racing closer.. i opened fire with my shipmates.. but.. yea... i wasnt very good -.-
