Hey folks,

Have been kicking around on Disco for about six months now, and i like it, so i guess i'm staying around for a while.
The leadership of the faction (White Tigers) i was in on previous server has become vacant (we have dropped from about 20 players to about 3 in 2 years), but the RP we had was pretty good.
Our ethos was thus: If the pirates are shooting us, the traders are safe.
I think it would work here, with a few adjustments:

We were a lawful, military faction, aimed at protecting traders and hunting down pirates. We weren't bounty hunters or mercs, as these services are provided free of charge (donations always accepted). We used to help new players get started (much like the angels), with cash and trade run advice, and we'd hunt down malcontents who'd base camp/dockrape innocent traders.

i'm thinking of running it under a kishiro/ageira tag, for the following reasons:
those companies own the technologies of the trade lanes and jump-gates, giving a larger ZOI, backed up by solid RP.
There are few lawful factions in kusari.
there are few lawful factions that can freely operate in all the houses, protecting traders, not the whims of the current house politicians (i refer here to wars between bretonia/kusari, lib/rhein)

so, we'd be the military arm of k/a, protecting the trade lanes (and thereby traders) from pirates. We'd be able to chase a pirate down to a jumphole, and have to leave it there (county line stuff). we'd have no jurisdiction in a system without trade lanes, and if a WT tagged ship were to be found there, i'd expect damn good reason for it.

the major sticking point that i can see people disagreeing with is that we'd essentially have one of the largest ZOI of all: anywhere there was a trade lane.

only mercs, bounty-hunters, freelancers and (power) traders would have larger ZOI. merc's and bounty-hunters can attack lawfuls as well as awfuls, and powertraders are generally alt.chars of the latest uber-dread-juggernaut-corsair battleship. We'd try to balance that out.

ships & equipment
would be kusariberty, with the rank-and-file in defenders/guardians/avengers/havocs/gunboats (if ageira-tag), weapons would be strictly rp, no tiz/nomads. I'd love to be able to say 'no cap-whoring', but sometimes it doesnt pay to bring a knife to a gunfight, so access to caps will be upper echelons only, no exceptions, and deployment would be a rarity, not a regular saturday night slot.

diplomatic relations:
all lawful/house/trading factions would be friendly,
bounty-hunters/mercs neutral-ish (this would be on their behalf - we'd be in competition, clearing up contracts for free; also, the bounty-hunters are practically a standing army, and the merc's are soldiers with no leadership - anathema to disciplined troops),
junkers and zoners unfriendly-ish (due to their pirate connections)
smugglers unfriendly (pirate connections again),
wild/nomads enemies.

having a pirate tag and id is not enough: pirates would have to commit acts of piracy upon a trader for us to chase them down, if they run, they get chased back to the jumphole they <strike>crawled out of</strike> came from. If they stand and fight, they are engaged by no more than 2v1. there is NO honour in a gank-fest. If they cry 'uncle', they are expected to repay the money to the trader twice over, in effect, becoming pirated themselves. (i expect this to be controversial).

Goals:
patrol of the tradelanes of sirius, protecting traders, occasional convoy escorts. we would not have the right to stop and scan for cargo, nor demand contraband - thats the job of the house military. Kishiro/ageira technologies do not care what cargos are carried along the trade lanes, only that the house governments continue to service the loans they took out to honour the extended warranty contracts they signed. we just shoot the people who shoot trade lanes, and chase them off.

recruitment:
would be open to all lawful citizens of sirius; multi-clanning across the lawful/awful divide is fraught with tensions and temptations.

so, crazy or not so crazy?

Wait, so you're helping traders out of the goodness of your heart?

Why isn't anyone helping pirates out of the goodness of their heart?

Lack of realism bothers me.

the RP reply to that is: Ageira/Kishiro pays
the real world answer is: I've been trading like mad to get the cash together for this enterprise, and if i see the word BORON one more time.... i'll go crazier. seriously, its like being an ant-pirate: they can get into their pirate bombers and ambush someone when they get bored of trading, i can go and hunt me some pirate scalps

thought that was what power-traders did?

no offence, and i dont mean to tell you what to do, but wouldnt it be better for you to just join an armed forces/police faction? the police for example, are undermaned everywhere except maybe liberty, though even there it might not be so lively.

My BAF character spends a lot of time hunting smugglers, theres a lot of them and no police to hunt them most of the time, especialy rhineland, I have never even seen a rhineland police character.

your intentions are of course fine, il stress the fact that theres a general shortage of lawful military(ignoring liberty) but especialy police.

most important thing is you have fun, which honestly in my opinion involves picking a faction low on numbers, you're likely to get more action, Corsairs seem to be 2-4 times larger than Bretonia, outcasts and bretonia combined might be equal perhaps. but then theres CR to fight, and they're likely around the size of the bretonian military, not counting indies. I dont have figures to back this up, but the fleet of around 12 or so in NL the other day, which didnt include many official corsair faction members, proves my point.

the problem with joining a house military is that they are governed by the politics of their nation, which is to be expected, as that is where their mandate derives.

I agree about the shortage of lawful/police factions: it seems everyone has a pirate char these days.

the aim of the faction will be to give those people who dont want to pirate a chance to get out of the trader ship and dust off the dogfighting reflexes, working as part of an organised, controlled team. This means that a trader has a chance to strike back against piracy, in a fighter, not a cap. If the pirates are taxing him at every turn, is it small wonder that he goes for a cap asap?

Err, i dont get it ?

Edit: quote button broken?

I actually like this idea.
But if its the tradelanes and gates you protect you shouldn't ever go 5-10k from a tradelane, whether its the same system or not
Also if losing a fight you should flee, you don't have the resources or reward to risk your life and ship

My advice: choose Ageira or freelancer: Lances for free, Kirosho is KoS in Bretonia

Markam, As you can see from my sig I have BAF characters. But traders want an escort for their run, not just specific house parts of it. For instance - pirates generally target in magellan or sigma 13, house militaries can do nothing there.

I've found it almost depressing when Bretonia is empty and I want to protect or fight some nasty pirates.

But on the other hand - pirating is pretty tough already, especially to make a reasonable profit compared to trading

if you take a kishiro tag, you wont be welcome in bretonia.
if you take a ageira tag, you wont be welcome in rheinland.

I have a question about the two lines I quoted above. First you said that smugglers would be unfriendly to you, followed up with that Kishiro/Ageria doesnt care about what cargo is carried. Now heres where my question lies. If you are going to be Kishiro/Ageria IFF, Then why care what cargo you are helping to escort? If Kishiro/Ageria doesn't care then I think the faction shouldn't either.

By the way, I like the idea :D

theres so many pirates that i personally dont see you guys needing help as said before it seems like everyone has a pirate charcter allmost to the point where unless theres powertraders there is NO TRADEING (liberty being one of em as you guys love to rape it)
