2 years before his Gunship's destruction, Captain Inoue felt that a new ship was needed, a ship that would not only be able to withstand much more of the dangers that exist in the Edge Worlds, but also would carry a arcology so it could spent a significantly longer time in deep space so it's crew could spend much more time conducting research. Utilizing the money he had made with his previous discoveries and experiments (especially one that involved placing an Android-type AI on a transport vessel), he bought himself a cruiser built by the Red Hessians which fell into Junker hands, and heavily modified the ship once intended for combat so that it would fit a more scientific purpose. The ship was named "Illumina", after the ship Inoue flew when he was fighting Kusari together with the Blood Dragons years ago.

The Illumina's "crew" mainly consists of robotic beings controlled by the ship's AI named "Sophia-4" (the 3 earlier attempts to create a AI that could almost singlehandedly control all of a ships secondary functions never made it beyond alpha testing) - Inoue knows that only very few humans would even tolerate (and not even necessarily support) the mission he placed upon himself: understanding the Slomon K'Hara race instead of fighting them. Thus, the only human crew members, which will be described in detail later, are very close friends of the captain, which all have sworn to follow the same goal as he.

Originally a warship, the RV Illumina has been heavily repurposed, to shift the ships focus from combat to deep space research - the captain is not very interested in armed conflicts, although he may assist certain factions believing in cause he supports from time to time. On the cost of much of it's old combat abilities, it has been outfitted with multiple laboratories, an arcology, a med bay capable of treating even diseases nobody besides deep space explorers like the Illumina's crew know, very advanced communication systems and even a hangar for ground vessels as well as space craft, ranging from light, unarmed landing crafts and space probes to a VHF for extraction missions and two heavy ground exploration tanks, capable of withstanding even the sand storms on Planet Pygar.
