Igiss, you seem like a good mod maker, maybe u can even make ur own models or games. So my suggestion is kinda big. You guys should try to make freelancer 2 (PLEASE DONT LAUGH, FLAME THIS). I know this would be SUPER hard and time consuming, but its something to think about. You have been making discovery for... a long time. They did plan to make freelancer 2, but i think it was cancelled, if im wrong im really embarrased XD.
Would be a fantastic endeavor. There are several engines out there that I think we could use but from what I have seen community open-source games are fairly slow and cumbersome to develop...would be great if anyone committed to it tho.
I think that if Igiss wanted to do that he would have done it by now. Plus ever since digital anvil went down and Microsoft let the internet hosting go it's been pretty much an independent thing.
Theres not really enough support to make another one tbh.
Mod making for FL is quite different from creating a WHOLE game.
Freelancer's limited editing possibilities (no scripting for example) make's it quite easy to mod it.
On the other hand, a game is a quite different endeavor. You need many programmers skilled in C++, DirectX and game-making in general.
I don't want to make incorrect assumptions, but even if all the members of our community took that endeavor full-time, it would not succeed.
OpenLancer tried, but failed. There were some quite skilled programmers in their team, but like all these kind of projects, they ran into technical difficulties, as well as the decline of player interest in Freelancer in general.
So, unless we have some solid base to start from (the current FL source for example), a project of this magnitude would not be possible.
Jumpgate Evolution will be what many FL fans will switch over.
It features advanced combat physics (like freelancer, only more real-like), a large universe and all these goodies.
SOAS is not a sim as far as I know.
Also, the rumor that the next game of the X universe (X4?) will feature multiplayer, is going to be the last blow for any chances for a fan remake of Freelancer.
' Wrote:Jumpgate Evolution misses lots of the important features of FL unfortunately and mainly seems to be about shooting things, again again and..again.
That's what Freelancer is in essence... Yes, there is trading in JGE too.
Not to mention, any large community will have it's roleplaying guilds/clans. Even in EVE online there are many of them. Mind you, EVE has a very complex and detailed lore behind it.
Jump Gate classic (with it's very complex battlesystem) makes for very complex tactics in group-battles. Also, you can die real easily if not careful.
In the end, it may be more pew-pew than basic roleplaying (like we have here), but one thing never excludes the other.
