Wow.. It made me speechless.. and rofl a couple of times due to its contents.
I wonder why there wasn't any attempt by mods & admins of that time to close the thread at all. (I wasn't involved in the community back then, so i barely have any clue)
Note: Please don't discuss the person(You Know Who) here. I'm afraid that this thread would be filled with tonnes of arguments(from the said person and the counter sides) if we do. (coz i believe that he/she is among us, watching from the dark)
It's a semi-flood thread with lots of gifs and not so serious posts. In a way it's a positive tribute to how we cope with differences.
Also we need narratives. Good guys and bad guys. Members we can relate to, like, and dislike. It's part of the kit that glues the community together. Heroes and villains, we read about them every day in our so-called unbiased media; one nation is presenting a story from one angle and other nations taking a different angle; one newspaper presenting a leftist view, another a right-winged, and that's fundamental to our self-understanding. The reality is that there are no heroes or villains, but we need that illusion to make sense of things. We are simple creatures with a strong desire for the social.
So the Karlotta thread is a way for one group of players to position themselves in one way in contrast to how other groups of players position themselves. People align themselves with who they like and adopt the viewpoints of the group, especially in this community where intellect and maturity is super limited. That's just how human being works, we are limited. We need to reduce complex problems to bite-size chunks so we can handle it, we need the illusion of "right" and "wrong", goodguys and badguys. Even if most of it isn't "real", it's far better than to pretend that there are no differences between us and where we lay our sympathies. The 70 pages of that thread also indirectly indicates the importance of these narratives.
In that view 'Karlotta' like 'JihadJoe' are reduced to positions rather than persons. I'm sure I'd enjoy sharing a pint with both.
it's what happens when you know you are right, but are unable to express yourself calmly and logically when faced with questions, creating a defensive mindset. in this way, whenever we are defensive, we are channelling the spirit of the karlotta; giving us the insight of how terrible it must be to exist in this restrictive bubble 24/7. with that, our hostility towards someone who behaves this way evaporates and is instead replaced by tolerance and understanding.
Oh man this brings back memories, probably shouldn't have posted this but so far the admins and mods didn't close it. However some people have butthurt over this so.. uhm yeah..
