Hello everyone!

Before you begin any further, let me point one thing out... this is not the place for flames, or pointing fingers or anything!

The question is simple. Some might know, some might not, that I've started a crusade to create a shipline dedicated to OSC. So far it's going well, but brought me to a question.
Not long ago, Swallow added the revision of the Armored Transport ( aka. Pelican) to his to-do list.

My question connects to this, since I'm already doing these passenger transport/liner things, what do you guys think, should the Pelican be revised? If so , what would your expectations be ? If not, well ... that is an easy one.

I know many people fly it and are grown to it because it is a pretty handly little thing, that's why I'm curious.

For those who do not care or don't want to get involved, please, the door is that way Smile

Let the discussion begin!

I think the Pelican is too small to be a transport. Now I don't know what's the policy regarding vanilla models but I see two ways to deal with that:
1. Scale up the model;
2. Leave the model as it is but make it a freighter.

I don't think this ship should have anything to do with the luxury market.

The peli is a very interesting ship for what it is. Even back in the ye old days people would call it the poor man's GB. It is a very good ship when it comes to pvp, but I would hardly call it a trade ship. Leave it be as it is, the low powercore balances out the good agility and size as well as the lack of ability to mount heavy transport shields.

Voted no.

The ship is unique and unique should that be. It's the most balanced ship in entire game, since it has just 800 units of cargo, giving in return its size and unique ability to mount both fighter and transport turrets. It's small, but it cannot run away so fast like a freighter yet it can fend off smaller vessels - that's what it makes jack of all traders.

It's not an unit designed for pure trading. That's a ship for roleplaying, offering decent combat capabilities.

It's not a transport. Not really. Time and time again I have to listen to people say "oh, the Pelican is too small for a transport, it's so hard to hit, it's OP".
With 800 cargo space, you cannot realistically consider it a "trade ship" at all. It's more appropriate to compare it to a gunboat, since its size, speed and cargo hold are closer to gunboats than to bigger transports.
And when you look at it like a gunboat, it's small and pretty fast but with a terrible shield and a poor selection of guns.

Turning it into a freighter would mean giving it 200 m/s thrust speed which would be awkward to say the least. If it had a freighter shield and more freighter-ish hull level, it would be annihilated by snubs thanks to its low turn rate and huge size. It it got a more freighterish core, it also would not be able to sustain its many guns.

To make at a balanced freighter, it would have to be scaled down, speeded up, and given fewer guns at which point you may as well just make a new freighter that's designed as such to begin with.

Exactly this. The Pelican is a ship between classes, superheavy freighter, superlight transport, poor man's gunboat. The sort of thing I'd like to see more of, not less.
It's fun to fly, with fighter guns it has really impressive sustainable dps, and its small and fast enough to have reasonable survivability. On the other hand, its transport shield still leaves it easy enough to damage (compared to gunboats) and its lack of powercore limits its options for transport turrets.

It's a very well balanced ship that really needs no adjustment.

I have one myself and I use it almost exclusively for RP and given that I can out DPS snubs if I do trade I don't worry about pirates that much even if it has not a lot of cargo...

Same can be said for the Ragnar but that has freighter stats

What's the problem with an 800-cargo "armored transport" (something that would presumably be capable of carrying high-value cargo/VIPs safely) actually being a reasonably capable PvP ship?

It's worse at PvP than a Gunboat while not holding significantly more cargo. It doesn't need nerfs or a rework.

I belive I never said anything is wrong with it, the idea came up a while ago at Swallows end, and I was curious, since I'm trying something for OSC anyways for passenger ships. That is all. No need to panic.
