After a very interesting Steam discussion over my buddy's econ (Dude takes AP Macro and loves to rail on inaccuracies in video games. I was dumb enough to point him at Disco, and the last time he visited, he played for a bit.), the question came to:

What would you pay, in credits, for TF2 Scrap Metal?

We had someone with access to a graphing calculator and an internet connection run the numbers, and what I came up with was... interesting, to say the least.

To begin with, the assumption is that a weapon drops every 50 minutes or so (source: glorious TF2 wiki). That's around two or three powertrading runs, assuming a profit of 50 million, per weapon. It takes 2 weapons to make 1 scrap, so we're looking at an hour and 40 minutes per scrap.

So the math could be summed up as

Code:
125.000.000 per Scrap Metal, taking into account wider applicability of the Metal compared to credits in the overall videogame economy and the ease of which credits can be earned otherwise, meaning you can either buy a cloak or a piece of Scrap with that money.

Reclaimed and Refined are just Scrap multiplied by 3 and 9, respectively, so that Refined Metal would be 1.25 billion credits (give or take).

Also, keys would be around the daily Disco economy were everyone powertrading 1 run per hour, so, let's see here, ((50.000.000)/30)*1440 = 3.6 TRILLION credits.
That's a lot of credits. Not counting PoB shenanigans, we have a 2 billion per character limit, 5 characters per account, 125 players on, 10 billion * 125 is around 1.25 trillion credits. That puts forth the argument that a key would cost more than the total number of credits in circulation at any given moment. Of course, that's pure numbers. The actual price is likely to be far lower than that.

Unfortunately, were it that simple, I'd be powertrading for a bit and grabbing Scrap Metal at (for us powertrading scum) bargain prices from those dumb enough to be selling it and make a killing buying Keys.

Then there's the fact that ONLY vets (and the odd silent trader) would have that kind of money to throw around, and vets have at least a billion tucked away via shenanigans, which they're smart enough to not blow about an eighth of on something for a game they're not playing if they're on here.

Actually, congratulations, everyone who shows interest. You have just been roped into my new microeconomics project.

So I turn to the community. What do you believe the price for Scrap Metal from TF2 should be?

For some, a billion's a fortune. For others, it's on their "buy on a lark" fund that trashes the meta and gets Zoner caps deleted.

I used Scrap Metal because it's pretty much the measure of currency over there. If we can come up with an exchange rate, that would be amazing for microeconomics nerds the world over.

Comparing such games is always difficult as TF2 has a RL monetary value attached to it, while each person on Disco has a different perception of effort and the value of their own time.

For me, 1 000 000 000 credits is around ~15,00 USD

PSA: If you have been having stutter/FPS lag on Disco where it does not run as smoothly as other games, please look at the fix here: https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthrea...pid2306502

so 10bills for $1

you can't compare scrap metal tf2 to sirius credits for plenty of reasons

let's give a very simple example: weapons drops are FREE,doesnt require you to do anything while in disco you have to invest a lot of hours of doing something you do not want to do and don't enjoy it doing so(even have to lose a lot if you meet other players, such as pirate or worse..)

so..spazzy is right $10-15 will be an appropriate price for 1 bill ,so 3,7 mil per scrap

What about refined?

And yes, something, that can cost for 2 bills, is unusual hat. Killstreak weapons... May be 150 mills... So, Specialized Killstreak should cost ~300... And Professional Killstreak is something about 500-600.

Mind the strange ones, which would cost from 50 to 750 mills, depends on type of it. Such as... Let's see, we have a Specialized Killstreak Strange AWPers Hand (Sniper Rifle reskin). How much it could cost?
