From the infocard for the Cloaking Device Mk2:
Quote:This device is suitable for mounting on gunboats and some transports [sic] class ships.

I believe that this is rather misleading, as mounting a cloak on almost every gunboat prevents it from using Capital Armour Upgrades. This seems rather unfair since no other class of ship has this constraint when using a cloak.

The average number of turrets for a gunboat is 6, which at 5 cargo space each takes 30 cargo. For many people a Capital Ship Thruster is a necessity for PvP, which takes 25 cargo space. Adding to that the 200 cargo space required by the cloak itself and the mandatory 30 cargo taken up by the shield results in a total of 285 cargo. (This excludes the Reinforced Cruise Disruptor which although useful on capital ships is not a necessity.) With the average gunboat cargo space limited to 400-480 this makes it impossible for almost every gunboat to mount even a CAU 5 (190 cargo space) with a cloak.

As far as I can see, the only gunboats capable of mounting a CAU 5 are the Order, Corsair and Bretonian ones*. None of these can mount a CAU 6 or above. Being forced to mount a HAU gives gunboats a significant disadvantage in PvP, and I do not think this is justified. Is this intentional or can it be fixed? In my opinion the easiest solution is to simply reduce the cargo space required by the cloak to 150.

*I have exluded the Nomad Gunboat as it uses the Nomad Cloak instead, and the Junker Gunship and Civilian Explorer as they require the Mk2 Advanced.

If you ask me, cloaks are already far too common toys around. It's true that gunboats may have problems with mounting cloak + armour combination, but well... Mounting an cloaking device gives you the opportunity to move like ghosts withno being detected. It allows you to take some vessels by surprise with decloaking behind, also known as buttcloaking in some places... Well, that's not the thing I'm speaking about, if you find lack of biggy armours uncomfortable, just don't mount the cloaking device and use bigger armour platings.
Sometimes 2 pros are too much and you have to choose one of them.

They only problem with cloaks I see is about light cloaking devices. They're pretty useless to do anything than tactical retreat as they let you to remain cloaked for a very short while.

A cloak is a pvp advantage all on its own, weaker armour, while making literally no sense inrp, balances that advantage out.

That is true, however no other class, including ones more powerful than gunboats (cruisers and battleships), has got this limitation.

Frankly, Gunboats are one of the most (if not the most) OP thing in game currently. With possibility to handle pretty well both against snubs, gunboats and even against lolwutty bigger caps. Comparing gb's and bs's anti snub possibilities, the first vessel deals with them much better. Also, gunboats are currently one of the easiest shipclass to fly in, lets say battleships and even some snubs could be more difficult than funboats.

Look on it from lore-wise stuff. Yet 20 (!) years ago cloaking devices were extremaly rare things. Being used by Rheinlanders was an heavy surprise for other Houses, including Liberty an so on. Even the Order had only one (!) cloaking vessel, which was the Osiris, de facto Liberty's prototype vessel. People will say that it's about tech advance, but still such a big step in 20 years isn't very convincing. Correct me if I'm wrong, tho.

That is an interesting view, as I'd wonder how long a GB lasts if it tries to activate its cloak in the middle of a fight to run away fe. and have to evade everything without a shield for ~ 20 seconds till cloak hits in. And all that without having a capable armour upgrade.

Also, what Biggles wrote above. Cruisers can have a CAU6 with ease , same as battelships.
True, that against a CAU8 capital it is a slight dissadvantage, but not THAT much.

The cloak allows you to utilize burst damage at close range. This is useful for BCs against cruisers to get close and tank them to death and BSs for obvious reasons.

GBs lack such burst fire damage and, as such, would not profit from that cloak even if it gave them a chance to use capital ship armor.

Bump. I would really appreciate some dev/mod response - is this intentional and if so why?

As one who have gunboat+cloak , i can say it perfumes very well , even without CAU6 (i have CAU5 on it , but it would be only slightly weaker with HAU ) . It has sufficient armor , and even in heavy combat i manage to cloak and confuse opponents with that fast 20 second cloak activation , just to move away a little , and attack again . It don't need lighter cloak , it is fine as it is .
Besides , it leaves some advantage to people who decide not to equip cloak and go for heavy CAU instead !

so you are trading some amount of armor for quite a few minutes of invisibility which i think its a good thing in my opinion
cloaks will not and should not help you in a fight the stats should have been cleared about that..as in ..you can't cloak during one->long wait time and cruise disruptors ,cloak disruptors

so..what can you do with it? travel somewhere without everything in red shooting at you, which i'm glad to use it on my pirate gb+cr

People want to believe that God has a plan for them.
They don't wanna believe that anyone else does..
