Docking bays have been disabled for some time already. They don't work. I suppose they aren't going to be fixed soon. Due to that, heavy carriers, which are big and have relatively weak armour and firepower, are close to useless in battle. Yes, they do possess an admirable number of secondary turrets, but you aren't going to use your huge, mighty carrier to kill little snubs, are you?

What I propose to be done is that their armour is increased by some 20 - 40%. Changing stats is incredibly easy. I think that 1-2 of their secondary slots should be turned into heavy slots, which is also very easy. Due to balance, some of their secondary slots should be removed, which I think is also easy.

Basically turn them into heavy battleships, until docking bays are fixed. Light carriers (the Elbe and the Geb) don't need a buff by my opinion, and one of them might even need a nerf.


What do you think?

Were they nerfed when Docking Modules were introduced?

Yes. The Liberty carrier used to have 5 heavy turrets, 6 mediums and 1.1 million of armour points. Now it has 2 heavies, 4 mediums and 0.96 million of armour points. It does, however, have more secondaries which you can't use because shooting at snubs with a battleship is bad. And they aren't really a great defense against bombers either. Better than most battleships, but 2 medium-skilled bombers will still kill your carrier.

Carriers/light battleships have agility and a lower profile ergo their balanced already compared to heavy battleships

as for DM the only ship/carrier that really got effected was the bustard since it had no pvp capabilities and a price tag equal to those who do

I think that temporary buff followed by a debuff will end up in disappointment of players, even in case of fixing said problem.
Buff should be permanent in this case.

Another point is that it will be additional work for devs.

Bretonian carrier agility: 9.12°/s
Liberty carrier agility: 9.6°/s
Valor agility: 9.6°/s
Rheinland battleship agility: 10.31°/s
Legate agility: 12.96°/s

The Liberty carrier and the Bretonia carrier are close in size to the Legate, the Liberty one being slightly smaller and the Bretonian one slightly larger.

You have a point, but I think that carrier captains were already disappointed after their first battle. Can you think of a better way to make carriers useful?

You are right about your second point too, but is altering a couple of numbers in the code really that difficult? I've seen Spazzy's and Durandal(?)'s threads about it, and I don't think it would take them more than half an hour, if they are really tired.

It was also given a completely new model, any nerfs that happened after the change would have been balancing.

Voted no for obvious reasons. Devs have more important things to do than give a temporary buff to ships, like fixing docking modules.

Do they really alter a battle that much? What's the difference between a ship coming in from 14K , a ship being with the carrier when the battle starts, and one undocking from the ship itself? Is saving a few seconds worth that much?

This is exactly why carriers aren't really useful. Heavy battleships are simpler, more useful and more fun.

Well, yes. Again. But this isn't going to take them more than half an hour. Plus, the dev who was supposed to fix docking bays has left. She does make some random post from time to time, but as I understood, Alley isn't doing codes any more.
