I still questioning myself, after reviewing some communication logs, why do we have tags in front of vessel-names? In terms of organization and tracking it makes sense of course, but it also contains everytime a touch of ooRP in most inRP conversations. For example:
XY|Bubudada encounters ABC|Dodo
XY|Bubudada: What is ABC?
I mean, this gives me as a RPer the feeling everyone is flying with a huge flag with his name and his group through the space, which is tipically weird mostly.
More important it gains metagaming, which is good and bad in terms of activity.
I would prefer to encounter anyone just neutral without any "automatic" knowledge what he is about.
What do you think? Do we need tags or are these a relict of an old gaming time to show "look we are this group"?
Tags track activity and are visible to newbies and players who want an interaction: raids, pvp, RP, people to trade with etc.
I do agree though that a ship flying with a tag on their name feels very ooRP. I've never really felt they're inRP, but I think they are. Unfortunately.
The way I see it, tags are "papers", and not in-RP.
For example, I always ID people by their ship name instead of their tag, or by their ID/official faction name.
Every now and then people tend to forget that we are playing a game that is more than a decade old. If you have a suggestion on how to track faction activity without tags in character names, do tell, but I doubt it's possible. Personally, I use the IFF to identify other ships inRP.
@Laz - The sad truth is that at the current player count, people have to utilize player list in order to find an interaction more often than not. Back when there were 200 people on the server every evening, just flying around without ever looking at who's online and where would get you an interaction, but now, the chances of that are very slim.

I am not saying dont player list. I am saying that people shouldn't just see a tag and then that be all thats needed. Tags in my opinion should be ooRP. But looking at my track record, I am probably wrong :P
