RELATED TOPIC: Linkage

Now! Hopefully you'll have read my arguments before you voted.

First: Poll inspired by Sirrah Ark. I gave into peer pressure.

Second: In the same thread where said inspiration came from, there is the possibility of a rather sound potential faction being plotted. This is where the Military ID would need to come in.

The [potential] faction in question would act as a sort of Coast Guard, freeing up the Navy to do their actual jobs of patroling the borders, eliminating threats beyond the capabilities of the LPI, and enforcing Alaska/Zone-21.

Their goals would be (quoted from the thread):
  • To interdict and enforce fines for smuggling in Liberty Space
  • To protect the trade of well-being of Liberty and her citizens
  • To respond to requests for assistance, repair, towing, or medical aid.
  • To enforce trade laws of Liberty (such as the Trade Lane/Gate parts rules)
Now, uniquely number three. You might say, "OMGREPAYRSHP?!" to which I will respond, "Yes". This is of course revolutionary in the world of Disco... And I'm not even sure if I'm being only half or fully sarcastic in that regard.

Medical aid - strictly RP based, of course, but still it would enrich the Disco environment.

Enforce trade laws - Obviously the Navy and (whenever they're online and doing their jobs) the LPI do this, but as stated, its not really the Navy's job. You don't see many national militaries stopping the movement of potentially ill-begotten MacBooks. The LPI, in contrast, are hardly ever online. When the one (or two) are indeed online, they go about seriously (kudos!) but they aren't enough to stop the entirety of the smuggler armada.

Interdiction and enforcement of fines on smugglers - same situation. It's not really the Navy's job (exception being the hauling of Artifacts. ONOEZ! The public can't know!) and the LPI are never really online.

Patrolling the lanes - No more Columbian coke smugglers if you catch my drift.

In addition to this, smart smugglers go to Rochester which is, lets face it, a rather ooRP spot for an LPI to visit. The Coast Guard (Liberty Cutter Service, inspired by the Revenue Cutter Service, now known as the Coast Guard) would go a wee bit out of their comfort zone as required to save innocents, or prevent the structural collapse of a vessel's hull.

Herein lies the predicament. Being neither Navy nor LPI, they find themselves in a knot. Thus, the Military ID being the only logical option left (theoretically in partnership with a Navy tag).

Lets not forget Angus Dei either. They use the Military ID as their primary ID. They went through the process of acceptance just like the rest of us, yet they appear to be getting the short end of the stick.

So what arguments are there to the Military ID being removed? Noobs abusing it and acting as a Sirius police force? Thats what Hunters are (or at least act like *rolls eyes*), yet no qualms have been met. And lets think about this: How long are said noob-abusers with us? If they're abusing the ID, they probably don't know the rules. If they don't know the rules they'll get banned and send an angry "LOLWUT" in the sanction thread. If they're legitimate and truly adore this mod, they'll take the slap on the wrist, learn, and become members of the community. OR they'll learn in-game before they get sanctioned.

So what is there to lose by keeping it?

Then what is there to gain by keeping it?

A weighing of tables:

Loss: Noobs abusing this ID and instead flying into Kusari with a Rheinland Police ID.
Gain:
  • (Potentially) A new, exciting, RP enriching faction
  • Angus Dei's perseverance (regardless of their activity)
  • Future opportunities for factions (I.E. Mastermind's evil army RP group)
Is this truly a question?

I abstained. While I can see reason to keep it for certain factions, I have a very hard time seeing a reason for any independent with a generic Military ID... And to prevent such things, it would have to be an Admin-issued ID, given to approved factions only (or approved characters, if someone came up with a good reason).

Well, as I said... Nothing is going to stop less-than-informed individuals from breaking the rules.

If they read and respect the rules, they'll match ID and tag, with the ship and weapons, and life will be rather dandy.

However, the majority (if not all) people who abuse the Military ID are just here for their 15 Minutes of Fun, living by the "Red is Dead" and "LOLWUT" philosophy.

Those of us respectable members know its limits, and respect those limits. Thus, its not a problem.

If not the Military ID, they'll go bombing Honshu with a Civvie, or RFP, or BAF ID. Nothing can stop them other than enlightenment; which was readily and amply provided, but they chose to ignore it.

Signed.

The idea of keeping the Military ID for RP purposes appeals to me very much so, as well as the idea of a "Liberty Cutter Service" as an RP faction.

In fact, if the Military ID was indeed kept and the LCS was indeed formed.

I'd enlist =D

It honestly sounds like a really good idea, they get to do lawful things but aren't as stern and militaristic as the [LN] by that I mean that an "LCS" would be more focussed on helping people than Warmaking, heh.

Aaanyway, Military ID should be kept for 4.85
and if it is, LCS should be created, I think it's a great idea for an RP faction.

The pros of having it outweigh the cons, in my opinion. I haven't made noise about it since it hadn't become a problem, but now, even before it has been removed, it's removal is causing a problem.

Sometimes a faction requires more force than you can get in a freelancer or merc ID. And if they don't plug into a vanilla faction, what then? Well they have to get custom IDs made... but that can only happen in a new version.

The Coalition, the Colonial Remnant, the Phantoms, the Harvesters... They don't really plug into anywhere. How did they deal with life before they got custom IDs? (In the CR's case, aren't they the reason IMG will have cruisers, battleships?)

What about the GMG? The current faction seems to shy away from large ships, but I imagine in the 80 year war they had to have had more than little nebula skimmers to cripple a major house like Rheinland.

The existence of the Military ID keeps all of the bases covered for an uncertain future. You never know what kind of faction proposal might happen tomorrow.

Well, the Military ID only allows up to gunboats, just like Freelancers and Mercenaries. I don't think the Admins are going to approve any non-guard non-restricted ID allowing cruisers or battleships, that much is apparent. And my 'abstain' would have to swing towards 'no' if the proposed ID would allow such ships... Up to gunboats, maybe, with a Special Operations ID for a faction cruiser/battleship.

Ah! I understand your concern then... Allow me to provide their ship list.

Quote:Ships:
Liberty Fighters
Liberty Bombers
Liberty Gunboats (Strictly limited)
Cruise Liner
Prison Liner
Repair Ship
Heavy Lifter(if implemented, i cannot remember at this time)

Has your fear been alleviated?

Also linking to the thread in the first post. Sort of vital, no?

This is just an assumption, but I would think that if a faction based on the Coast Guard were formed, they'd only use up to Gunboats.

After all, real Coast Guard doesn't have anything much bigger than that anyway.
