First of all I am a pretty new member of Discovery. I had a few friends help me on the way to learning the game who I must thank, their online aliases are: Mr. Zelflow and Blindshot (They have other names too, but these have to be the most common).
I have been playing Discovery mod for about a month now, and I love the server and I must thank all the admins for the wonderful server they have put together.
I used to play games such as Warcraft 3 and EE-AOC which may be RTS games, but were a wonderful place for me to start learning how to RP. In Warcraft 3 there were maps where you put together your own RP. At first it was hard of course, but as I played it more often I learned from other players how to put together decent RPs. I then advanced to Garry's mod, a building game which had many mods, a freelancer mod too which is kind of funny. The main problem of this game is that new players are often frowned upon, due to the fact that the default name is: "Mingebag". A mingebag is a person who refuses to learn how to play the game, and all he causes is grief to the other players by building contraptions that kill and/or annoy other people. I too was made fun of for having the name Mingebag for a short period of time this also put me off from buying any games in the risk of being made fun of on them., but I overcame these challenges and slowly learned how to play the game from experienced players. I detest a certain type of person the most, even more than "Mingebags", elitists. These people refuse to share their wealth of knowledge with other people for the sake of being better than them. Unfortunately this game has both, but much less than other games which shows that this community is above all others.
As I started the game, I met people who were Mingebags (People who ruin the game for others), Newbies (People who are just starting), Spreaders (People who spread their knowledge to others), and Elitists (People who will not help anyone in order to look better than others). I learned that in the game people do not give you respect by the size of your ship, or the strength of your weapons, but by the willingness to learn and follow the rules. When I found a wiki page I was delighted, I read the history of many factions and most importantly the rules. But enough of info about what I did, now I want to help some of you who will actually read this and not just post blindly writing things like, "Why should I listen to you, you have barely played this game for 2 months.
To the Mingebags: This is the hardest group to talk to, they refuse to RP on the server and plain out make life miserable for the admins (Who already are working their butts off to get 4.85 out), and all the other players. Why would you do this? Does it bring you pleasure to bring down something some people worked so hard to create? You guys really have to mature and learn that not all people like your tactics of calling people noobs. This just makes you look more like a fool. Try to work with other people to learn how to play the game, you may just become a respected person in the community. If the person continues then follow a simple rule about driving: In russian it is called the Three Ds, an english translation is: Give the road to the stupid people. Let them learn for themselves that what they are doing is bad.
To the Newbies: These players are like little children, they learn from the rest of us. We must answer their questions as if they were our equals. Do you see parents saying to their children if they ask a question, "No child you are dumb and know nothing thus I will not tell you anything." Does that really help anyone? This just pushes someone to become a Mingebag. This part is directly to the new players: You guys have to keep learning no matter what anyone says, this just shows that you are better than them.
To the Spreaders: Why can't you Elitists be like these people? They are the people who are truly respected in the game. They help everyone learn no matter who they are. These people are what an ideal community is made of.
To the Elitists: Is there a problem with helping others learn? I see people complain that all these mingebags are the admins' faults or that they are simply noobs. But most of these players are just mad at things that people do to them.
My advice here is mainly to the new players. To learn you must go above the ones who make fun of you and become like the Spreaders. Some things you guys can do is read up on the History of the Sirius system, it will make you more aware of things around you. This can either be done by playing single player or reading about the factions on the wiki. Another thing is to read the rules, these are located also on the wiki. Nobody is exempt from the rules, even the admins.
Finally I must again thank the admins for creating such a wonderful mod. I also hope the community grows larger and better as time passes.
We were all noobs at some point - others seem to have forgotten. Fortunately there is enough space on the server for 'spreaders' to spread their wings, as it were.
Haha, you have my full "agree", and you have sumarised it pretty well. A lot of players forget about the fact, that there was a day, when they've entered the MP for the first time, eventually Discovery for the first time.
It is a bit about luck... when you get on for the very first time, you can run to various people, if you are lucky, it will be "Spreader" who will help you with start, informations and everything else. If unlucky, your question will be answered with " ROFL! ur stupid if u dont know how to ... "...
Before the rather long time I have runned on two great people who helped me a lot ( Altough since I'm Dungeons and Dragons veteran, there wasn't the problem about RP, just about Freelancer and mod itself), and I am still thankfull to them *is a bit nostalgic there* Thanks Oniros and Tinkerbell! Thanks that I was able to be around before the nearly year, when the Congress idea was born and enjoy all the "adventures" with you! ...Its a shame you have both left... and this is monologue....
I buy things I don't want to make an impression on people I don't like.
Well said. I have to admit, however, I bounce back and forth between being a spreader and an elitist. I end up doing the elitist thing on rough days, usually when I am trying to accomplish something specific in-game. Otherwise I am quite helpful most of the time and have "trained" a fair share of recruits. I am currently working with a couple new players, one being my older brother. (managed to convince him to finally leave WoW alone )
I can point to a few extremely well-listened to people that give evidence not to consider post count, and a few extremely... not-listened-to people that give evidence for the same. I won't, though, but... they exist. Really. For the really tit-for-tat among you...
If you a scorn a newbie when he's starting off, you might see him later as a BH BC. If you help him, instead, then you might see him honorably fighting alongside or against you later.
No promises, but you catch more flies with honey than with high-energy plasma.
