I know it is unintentional by the majority but as it has happened to me SEVERAL times in the past few days (count maybe a dozen) I want to mention this again.

"Why don't you talk more in combat? This is role play!"

Hmm...I am outnumbered as I fly my BH gunship which has fewer bats and bots and less hull than a full size one. You have a gunboat and two bombers. You gunboat is armed with a razor/inferno and of course BOTH bombers are armed with supernova antimatter cannons. The preliminaries are done--I am a mercenary and engaged you on contract expressing how I regret the action that must be taken.

The furball has commenced. You get a little sour in your gunboat as you realize the nimbleness of the gunship makes it a fair match. The two bombers however are a real threat--especially as I am outnumbered. Being a sight typist, I am sparse in my comments in such a situation and if the pilots are really good I may have to be actually silent (I'm sorry but Lt Uhuru has the day off). Knowing the fighters are good and might nail me with my back turned I decide to concentrate on one. Ah a missile hit blows off a piece of gear! Concentrated gunfire through breached shields clobbers the hull--and then it happens.

"Hey, where's the role play? You just going to pvp?" Annoyed I start to answer and realize the pilot asked this question just as his bomber got in a prime firing spot to fire his SN. I go straight for a split-second to type a reply and WHAM! Surprise! Supernova hit! Followed by missile spam and everything he has. [This same tactic has also been used to get CD hits in a chase--multiple times].

This process repeats once or twice more and when the battle ends I get the barrage of crappy comments about my rp (especially if I cleaned their clocks).

I have one thing in common with Jesus here--I hate hypocrites. You role play elitists need to walk your talk. Want to ask a question in rp? Fine--break your fire long enough for a reply. Surely don't whine if you don't get a response because I am dodging you and your multiple partner's supernovas.

Now I don't mind the attempt, all is fair i love and war, but what I do mind is the unsportsmanlike barrage of "you rp-less lame oorp pvper" comments I get sent to me by players who usually have one thing in common...they lost.

I'm a merc. Its a job. I get paid. I ain't there to talk a lot while you try to kill me or hold back on killing you because of your ship weapon loadout. Try fleeing if you can't handle the fight.

In one-on-one or against an opponent not as well armed or skilled I actually make it a point to talk more--to give them a chance and build the fun for them. If they type a response, I halt or delay my fire to allow them to finish. But if you are on me with better skills, higher numbers of pilots or happen to type a heck of a lot faster than me--PLEASE stop whining about the lack of rp--especially if you and your buddies all are carrying supernovas and ONLY firing at my ship.

RP is a two-way street and those who have the self-perception theirs is the "best" sometimes should stop to look at it from the other side once in awhile.

For those who hate combat I understand and am sorry. My character has to do it on occasion and I can't in good conscience throw the fight simply to spare you. No pay for me in that and damages my rep as a merc with potential clients.

To those of you who are good sports hats off! Aki Kimura and Jack Sparrow had me dead to rights and let me slip through a jh--I wouldn't have held it a bit against them if they had killed me. But they justified it with rp, not "Hey, we feel sorry for you go ahead and leave" (I gave them a merry chase and survived against unlikely odds to get there and it was a hostile system to them. They decided not to pursue through). In a 6 vs 1 match the first pilot I downed was in a slipstream. He pmed me how funny it was that he vaporized so fast (fyi--best sport I have seen on the server the whole time I have been here). He understood it was part of the fight. Those guys have my respect and I consider the "best" players.

I'm not mad--this is a little tongue in cheek--but check the beam in your eye before you start an in-game flame about my perceived sliver if that shoe fits you (man I love mixing metaphors).

I can NOT type and fly myself, so once the pew pew starts my rp ends. I refuse to get killed while I try to type when I should be flying.

I've got a few personal guidelines when it comes to in-game RP chat with opponents..

First, if the battle is too hectic or there are too many enemies that you can't type while flying, don't try it. Any important RP chatting should have taken place before the fight began anyway, so that the enemy expects you to continue talking while you fight is a bit unfair. Furthermore, several people try to get you to talk to them in mid-fight if their side has more pilots, because you can be hurt more easily while typing since you can't dodge effectively.

Though I do chat if doing so won't get me killed/hurt in a fight..

If people complain about you not chatting while fighting, ignore them. Also, if they gave some one-liner about attacking you, then open fire before you have time to do anything, then ignore them. The only time they have cause to complain is if YOU are the attacker and don't do enough RP, or if they begin to RP with you and give you time to respond, but you don't RP back before the battle begins.

Hell, anyone who has fought me knows how infuriating it can be. Specifically my connection making me jump halfway across the system and back.

Because of this, I'm more likely to go evasive and heckle the opponent with RP - but then, that's just because I have all the combat efficiency of a rusty spoon.

As for people who will go out of RP just to provoke you into opening yourself to a shot, well, that's just low and should be sanctionable. Hell, marked/unmarked OORP in system chat is sanctionable actually. Just keep a finger on the Prt Scrn key I suppose :/

I can sit still in front of a hostile and get all the RP in before commencing battle.
Countless times I've ran into players who will stop their engines and do the same.
In the end we get all the rich RP needed and then the battle commences with usually one firing their smallest gun....then it's furball time.

has happened to me a few times...

latest one being a group fight in the Tau's and a trader in a train decides to see it and actually gets into the middle of the battlefield so not only are we dodging shots but also a big fat advanced train aswell and while typing to get him out of the area for his own safety i got hit with a torpedo of some sort and well....i was in avasive manouvers the rest of the time untill i died a little later replying to another enemy who started to talk in chat

lesson learned: dont chat while fighting unless you know you can take a fair few hits

That's is soo true. If they already attcked you after their line of RP it's not your responsibilty to maintain the discussion. You get to defend yourself. The attackers have the obligation to RP before firing. If they did so and fired without giving you chance to reply and lost the battle, then ignore any comments about lack of RP. No rules were broken.
Roles reversed, if you stated with more than a couple words your intent before you engaged, you are fine.

Now see--that's why I brought this up. Thanks for the feeds.

Problem isn't "the lack of rp", its simply the lack of good sportsmanship.

Game's a lot nicer when we drop the insults.

i just ignore any requests for typing during the fight. Like Dab said...if role play is to happen it must be before fight. Once that i am engaged i simply fire. I dont even read what others are saying.
