Well i am now using a barghest. Its a real monster. Mount nukemines and a sn and a cd and youll be ripping up gunboats, transports and even light fighters.
We defiantly need more info before giving you advise. Where will you be operating, who is your character friendly with, who is he not friendly with? Whats his background? Once you start answering those questions, what bomber to use will become self evident, or at least narrowed down to two or three.
My main area of operations will be in and around Liberty. Background and story will be adapted at a later time.
I have actually be looking at the Barghest but was a little intimidated by the description of it's large size. Isn't it a pretty big target? And how about the handling of it?
Edit: Forgot to mention friendlies:
He will be on good terms with Hackers, Outcasts and Rogues (seeing as i want to mainly operate around Liberty).
The Bargie is a large target, so I wouldn't recommend jousting other bombers with it unless you got excellent aim/strafing abilities. But it has a lot of armor and should be easily capeable of killing cap ships. Mount Debs and Sammaels and you'll be good.
Plus it's the sexiest damn bomber out there. I am admitedly holding out until 4.85 before getting a Bargie for myself, though.
There's no use beating around the bush. Yes, the Barghest is not very good right now. I've flown one for a long time now, and I know it's pros and cons.
It's big. Really big. Fighting against VHFs will show that very quickly. You'll have serious problems if you're fighting anyone with missiles and or a sunny. Against gunboats, it's an easy target. Against bigger caps, it's actually pretty good.
Contrary to what Nighthawk says, it's actually a much smaller target than you think from the front. You need to joust to stay alive and do damage quickly, but you still need to know how to dodge, by strafing or other means.
Firepower on it is as good as you can get with bombers. It's got the high power core of the two, and a forward firing turret. It's gun placements are very natural in combat too, so you should be landing hits pretty well.
Armor, yes, is very good. The best armor of all the bombers, actually. After an Mk-VIII armor upgrade, you'll have gunship level armor. One of the main weapons of the Barghest is the ability to outlast your opponent. If you can't dodge well to stay alive, don't fly it.
The SNAC positioning on it is fairly nice. It's very near the center of the ship, so it's accuracy is better than other bombers in ways there. Any bomber pilot worth his salt knows that against some pilots, you absolutely need to know how to pull out the wild card and vaporize him in one shot.
Maneuverability isn't good. You'll get used to it, but you'll have a hard and irritating time for a long while trying to keep up with well piloted maneuverable gunboats, and VHFs (as well as some bombers) will piss you off to no end if you don't stay in the right position by jousting correctly.
In closing, the Barghest is a bad ship, but with slight redeeming qualities. Armor never makes up for size and maneuverability, but it dulls the pain. If you haven't flown a lot of bombers, do not fly the Barghest if you want a chance in PvP.
