You wake up at around 6 AM local time. After your half-hour of getting ready, you're expected to hit the cafeteria. You'll be getting some socialization with the guys on the last shift, as well as the guys on yours.

There are actually around 330 dedicated crew on a given Brick, but you'll have 110 on most of the time, at least until they meet and mingle with the other two shifts. As you've probably gotten used to by now, the ship operates on 3 8-hour duty shifts, from 0800->1600, 1600->2400, 0000->0800

After you've eaten the Cambridge Victuals, you'll report to what you're expected to be doing this week.

Your fabulous options are:
  • Engineering, where you will be pulling emergency repairs and making sure the delicate parts are still functional.
  • Espatier duty, where you'll be on hand to deal with any boarders, or board a disabled enemy ship.
  • Bridge crew, where you'll be looking at instruments and will probably die from a lack of surge protection if the ship takes a hit.
  • External Repair crew, where you'll be welding further ablative armor onto the Brick because micrometeorites are a pain in the ass.
  • Gunnery crew, wherein you and your buddies are handling a turret to discourage would-be reavers.
  • "Porter", where you're going to be the human element making sure that the cargo is handled well. You'll have the Quartermaster there to help you. You will also be responsible for making sure that lunch is delivered to people mid-shift.

After your first contract, you're eligible for a specialist job. These are:
  • Gun Captain, where you coordinate the turret fire.
  • Quartermaster, where you oversee the supply situation
  • Exitus Pilot, where you'll be enforcing Senior Staff's will with a few more guns.

The work feels like forever, and the white flashes every few minutes get disorientating, but at least your cut will make you able to possibly be able to buy your own ship and call the shots for once. Meanwhile, the food you orddered up for your mid-shift lunch will be brought to you by the porters, who will then go back to assisting the quartermaster inspect the cargo and amenities.

The Senior Staff, in their internal power struggles, tend to seek out proteges from amongst your crew, and will encourage those among you they like to group up and pool their resources to get their own company and specialize in goals. The most notable one of these groups is Exitus, which is so successful as a side operation that no less than three Senior Staff members partake in its activities, and it has been legitimized into a fully autonomous mercenary company.

League crew contracts are over a space of six months, subject to at-will termination (with two weeks notice)by both parties. Amenities are extensive; you get hot showers, free food, excellent medical care, central heating, access to a state-of-the-art gymnasium, more than enough money to buy your very own Fighter, Freighter, or Bomber at the end of it, and if that isn't your thing, you have experience fighting, fixing, and helping people for your resume, as well as Senior Staff being more than willing to write a good letter of recommendation for you.

So there you are, after an hours-long shift, and you have some downtime. More socialization for you, buddy. However, you have like half an hour with the other dudes. Nobody's really on duty then because that's when the ship is usually moored. If the shift change takes place in space, you're on duty until you're relieved. Obviously, if the ship is in combat, you're in it until the fight is over or you're incapacitated, and if you're pulling espatier duty and the next shift shows up, you have more backup now.

Off-duty, you'll probably be making friends, writing letters home, and generally avoiding cabin fever. As stated before, you're likely to pool your resources with your friends to get your hands on a commercial vessel of your own. If you manage to procure your own trade ship, your experiences crewing the Brick should prove invaluable for handling the ship you have now.

Your career progression will probably look something like this:
  • Six-monther (expected to do a single six-month contract)
  • Side: Exitus Pilot (you blew your paycheck on a starfighter, didn't you)
  • Specialist (more money and more prestige, as well as chances to distinguish yourself)
  • Personal commercial vessel (eligible for internal contracts for...)
  • Optional: Funding and partaking in the construction of a personal merchantman carrier (with Senior Staff assistance, most likely)
  • Making a name for yourself (good luck)
  • Senior Staff (admittance subject to liberum veto; one vote against you means you don't get in)

Note on women: Women are generally not admitted into the League personnel pool due to its roots as a guy's club. Women who are admitted are specifically sought-out and Senior Staff being top-heavy with women is due to how exceptional they are... or the women in question are spouses/dependents of Specialists and Senior Staff.
