Inside the "Looking For Group" sub-forum description and pinned thread is the sentence "Flying Discovery Freelancer solo is never going to be fun, especially for a new player"

This isn't the best way to sell the mod to forum visitors. While it may or may not be true (depends on who you are and how you enjoy video games), the negative wording and tone isn't supportive to any readers who are flying solo. It can dishearten the reader. I suggest we remove that poorly worded sentence.

While I have your attention, may I propose secondly an updated paragraph which reads better and asks for less from the reader. Currently the post says:

Quote:Flying Discovery Freelancer solo is never going to be fun, especially for a new player.
You can post in this forum and give a brief description of your level of new-ness, your experiences, preferences in characters/locations/IDs and other.

Try to mention useful things such as:
*Your overall experience on the server.
*Your existing characters (factions they belong to, you do not have to disclose the names).
*What are you looking for in terms of RP, PVP and other.
*Do you enjoy using VoIP communications such as Teamspeak.
*Other quirks and tidbits you might want to share with potential friends.

Once you post a thread, it will remain in this thread until you tell a staff member to remove it.
Other players will not be able to post in your thread after you do. This allows for a focus on a player's confidentiality in regards to what their server presence is.

After your thread is posted, Player Groups and Individuals can then use the forum PM function to contact you with proposals.

Which I think can be improved to something like:

Quote:Are you looking for a wingman?

Post in this sub-forum so other community members can contact you and you can fly as a team.

If you'd like, it would be useful to include:

1. What you are looking to play (Trading, Mining, Military, Pirate etc)

2. Your current character's factions (Liberty Navy, Outcasts etc)

3. Any other info you might want to share so others understand your play-style and wants.

4. What your experience is on Freelancer Discovery (Weeks, months or years)

Your thread will remain up until you tell a staff member to remove it.

Community members will not be able to reply in your thread. Member's can use the forum PM function to contact you with proposals.

Side note: It would look better to have the sub-forum title be "Looking for Group" or "Find other players" (The word 'Find' is more powerful than 'Look') not "LFG: Looking For Group". No need for the acronym.

This is a roleplay server, and what keeps up the interest are the interactions between the players and group of players - be it casual chatter or a combat encounter or piracy or anything else. And even trading gets much more satisfying when you have someone to casually chat with, even if ooRPly.
But the general idea is as with any other multiplayer game - you need other players to experience the game in full, and when left all alone to get the gist of it will likely get you burned out soon, and you will likely give up on it sooner than later.

Peace, being the distant dream it is, comes inevitably, and goes hand in hand with justice.
Cursed be the war.

flying alone in empty systems for any period of time is snooze-inducing and makes me want to alt f4 right away

I don't disagree with any of you 3 but I feel you've missed my point which was that the wording "Discovery Freelancer solo is never going to be fun" is not a tone we need from official channels targeted towards newcomers, veterans or forum lurkers. It's simply negative language and it should be reworded. That's it.

I added a recommended text underneath as a secondary proposal which is shorter, easier on the eyes, has better spacing and asks less from a thread starter.

Agreed, the "flying solo in disco isnt fun" part should be removed. There are a lot of forum things that need improvements (rules presentation, game mechanic explanations, lore summaries, overall layout), that should also be implemented ingame.

There should also be measures taken to make single playing on the server more fun, like bar rumors that advertizing exploration interesting areas, treasure-hunt mini quests, etc.

There are some ways solo play can be fun. Missions can be fun, but unless you're in battleships, they're not credit productive.

Solo piracy can be fun.

Pirating NPCs in a transport can be fun.

Charting systems can be fun.

Finding unusual entities and pobs can be fun.

These are all very secondary.

The server used to be a lot of fun to fly alone when it actually had a steady population. You didn't know who anybody was and because of the amount of players you'd almost always get a pleasant interaction pretty fast if you logged in, which probably got you a friend or two who you probably only got to know inRP so you'd have them as an actual ingame wingman whenever you were playing if they were online. My usual routine was log in > fly in a direction > find a person/group of people > type words > enjoy self.

but nowadays yeah flying alone is awful, but it can also depend on the person
a person told me that he gets the same feeling from flying around in freelancer as one gets from watching fish swim around in a fish tank

"flying alone is never going to be fun" sure is going to discourage people and it could use with some rewording but people also need to know that theyre probably going to enjoy themselves more if they have other people around

Karlotta, I agree there is also more to be done. Thank you for your reply.

Riehl, solo can be fun yes, I agree. Which is one reason why I think clearly negative language isn't appropriate in LFG. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Pillow, yes the server has seen better years I agree. While today solo isn't as fun as being in a group (to X% of players), I do believe it's an easy edit to avoid disheartening newcomers who are currently flying solo. Thanks for your reply too!

I’ve seen how pvp mechanics have changed. There was a time when the mechanics enabled me to 1v5 people when i was half as good as i am now. The mechanics have been severely dumbed down since then to compensate for the average player’s drop in skill. (Ie sidewinders being a meta for groupfights)

You need a wingman to survive in the modern-day disco enviroment. You will not make it soloing multiple people unless the said people are LFs or are completely clueless. But thats from a pvp perspective, in other instances it can be fun.
