A question about Gaian Wildlife

Now to the Topic:
I love our little cute Gaian Wildlife animals!
Therefore I tried to breed some in my POB over the years.
But for some reason the base eats the little animals, which I don't understand.
Do the POBs have a butcher on board?
It would be awesome to have some animals on the Base, but the POB eats them.
Why?
