Ok so I have been on the server for about 3 weeks now.
Most of the time I have a pretty good time, you know? Chilling in space.
I found a few groups that I play with and I'm USI and Order| factions.
After doing a bunch of trading, I got the following ships that I (IMO) maxed out and play with:
1) Order Bastet heavy fighter with 6x class 9 TARANIS 750m/s
2) Order Waran bomber with AZURAS, SNAC, 2x scorcher, Cloaking device
3) Order Osiris battleship CAU VIII w/ cloak mk II adv.
4) USI Mastodon trader 5k cargo
I thought: Great, I have all the ships that I wanted, they are fully upgraded, time for some omicrons scouting!
But fight after fight, I lose 95% of my encounters. I know that Freelancer is not about pvp, and you should never take the game so seriously.
However, after losing to several bombers in my heavy fighter, getting crapped on when I am in the bomber against a VHF and being unable to do any damage to a cruiser while in my battleship, I am seriously starting to re-consider if the time investment I'm putting into this game is paying off in terms of satisfaction.
I am not a new comer to freelancer, but everybody that I play against seems 10x better and I don't even know what I am doing wrong.
I am engine killing, stafing, using same-speed weapons groups, tap firing and I still get destroyed and have people leave a "Pathetic" message in the chat after I leave their hull at 100% and get killed by a mine.
All I am left with is a mix of frustration, confusion and even some motivation that a brick bomber with a 58 turn rate can win against a nimble fighter with a 72 turn rate.
For the record, I'm playing with 200 ping but I am well aware that the shots are client-registered and I don't seem to have any visual lag, so I don't think that is the issue.
Anybody had a similar experience at the start? How long did it take you to hold your own on 50% of the fights?
Any tips? Thoughts? Considerations besides "Get gud n00b"?
Ahoy mate. Welcome to disco.
Everyone gets their rear ends handed to them at first - normal thing. PVP combat is tough meat my friend. There is however one rock solid way to get better at it if yu have the time and guts to commit to it - and that is practice. Head over to Conn and train with people. Looking forward to seeing you there.
I can empathize with you in the case of loosing. I am not new to the Freelancer Universe as well as to Disco itself but most of my fights are a predictable loss for me. Discovery community has a lot of PVP aces or just decent players who spent enough time learning the classes they are interested in and, sadly, balance doesn't help to equalize newbies and pros.
From one side it's fair because pro spent the time to reach that high, however, it also makes newbies or some oldies to leave this game because losing is not fun.
I can't offer you much except for 'git gud' option. I'm here for RP and so I embraced that I suck in PVP and rarely can win a duel or a fight in general. However, seems like RP is not enough for you, is it?
Don't worry about the fast dying or 100% enemy hull, i myself die the same way most of the times. As Docent said, if you have the time go to Connecticut for some training or get 1.5kk missions vs NPC's in fighter. Pathethic messages are junk one hehe, don't worry about em.
Enjoy your ships and game , you have a great builds ^ ^

Hey thank you for the reply!
The last 2 weeks I have been playing many hours a day/night since I am free until September when I'll have to go back to College.
However, I don't always find people to play with. I did some escort missions for traders that can make for huge convoys, its mostly RP, and I have to say that I have a good time. In the factions I am in, In the last 2 weeks even with my activity I rarely played with anyone else in a wing/formation type experience. Most of the time, I'm flying solo, trading solo etc. So obviously PvP is the next best thing. But I do enjoy the RP aspect for sure.
Edit: Thank you everybody for replying. I will be in Conn, and I will try to play a little bit more occasionally now that the addict-like come-back-rush (idk if any of you can relate ) is somewhat fading away
I can understand you as I'm in a similar situation in my region of play.
You're playing mostly Order and thus you have to stick to the Omicrons. However, Omicrons are rarely active because attract mostly PvE farmers.. or PVP aces. Liberty would be a better option but, allow me to be honest, I hate to see only Liberty having a player base capable of random interactions.
So, I'd recommend just enjoying your stay, perhaps join official Order faction (I think Vitoniz is still quite an active member of it). Not really much can be offered by me but I hope at least something was helpful
PvPwise, starting out by dueling is going to be rough. There are a lot of things you have to learn and then practice to get things going, so I recommend looking out for any group fights you can participate in. Events, raids, that sort of thing. It's a lot easier to figure things out when you aren't alone in the field and can focus on things other than staying alive.
I don't want to recommend Connecticut entirely since that's a sure way of burning out pretty fast, getting repeatedly murdered over and over can be exhausting unless you have someone who's there to teach you how things work and then putting those things to practice such as how to move around, drop mines, how to get better at aiming etcetera (that's how I started, for example). Conning mindlessly against random people can be pretty fun if you have patience and are willing to accept that you're going to die over and over, though.

Me too.
Some people play to win, some to hang around with friends. This game is very friendly oriented, it's easy to make friends. It's pity to leave, except if you are here to win. In that case you practise a lot lot, or leave to play something easier.
Hey i have been here a few months now and still suck at PvP and fighting, know what i do, i undock happy i tried! If you let this game get to you too much you will fall into the place many do! The place of disappointment and thats not a place to be!
I am absolutely terrible in PvP so if you wanna practice against someone i'd be happy to throw a few rounds in Conn with you, I personally hate PvP but despite that i do enjoy the thrill of it!
I say if you truly want to feel the enjoyment out of PvP you wanna join one of Pepe's raids with the Corsairs! You know why because them guys make it fun it doesn't matter to them if they win or lose!!!
- Tag your bomber, fly on it under faction
- That bomber is awesome, I have the same loadout and 3 warans in 3 factions haha
but it's only anti cap and you need friends and fleet fights
- Keep farming missions on osiris while you get promotions on bomber
