Basically, you only need a variety of good brushes (I do use both, custom ones as well as presets).

Then, create a new layer, and draw with a white brush set on maximal angle jitter. Then go to your layer, right-click and select Fill Options (dunno if that's the correct translation, the one under layer properties, second from top).
There, select Outer Glow and choose a fitting colour for your engine trail. You can also play a bit with the filter and blending modes to get different results.

Also: don't over-use Outer Glow, and take care that your engine trail looks 'logical', perspective-wise.

That's how I do 'em:)

Thanks, I'll try playing around with that technique. My engine trails aren't exactly fantastic at the moment:P. (Now I need to find some good brushes for this. Ugh.)

Heh. That was just a brush and some squiggly lines with blending effects.

You're welcome.

If used correctly, one can create quite the fine artwork/design with the resources available from the net. Just a matter of time, skill, passion and composition:)

I'd love to see more people get the tools to create their own designs on Discovery. Inspiration's always a good thing.
