I was wondering...why are trade lanes setup vertically?

Why not have them set horizontally, like docking rings, so you all ways enter them on the right side.(left in Bretonia :))
Or do the game mechanics prevent it?

if this has been discussed before, could someone point me to the thread.

I have never seen such a thread but it sounds like a good idea to alternate from the usual.

Can be done.
Should be done?
That's the question.

What would be awesome is trade lanes that go vertically up or down.

Imagine a system that is built far in every direction, on all three axes.

well it would help

I know of some color blind people who play the game, and cannot see what ring is the correct one to enter

if they were next to each other it would be like driving on the street... the one on the same side always goes the same way

but it is far too late for this to be integrated I think

I really like this idea. Or at least some that go diagonally up and down. Or some that go between two stars like 1k from each's corona. That'd be neat.

Far too late indeed. Perhaps in newer systems, but as it stands, since there are tradelanes all over the place, and eightybazillion of the blasted things that'd have to be changed, it'd be a royal pain in the neck.

Its not in the least little bit too late...
Just straighten up and fly right the moment you notice the issue,
and just because you'll spend 5 months on it doesn't mean it won't have been worth it...

I'd prefer to spend those 5 months either modding other more important things that need doing (Import models changed, texturing of others, balancing etc.) or actually playing the mod.

3D systems are easy to do, just have a tendancy to look strange with tradelanes. You fly straight..but yet are moving down. It looks odd really.

Here's something for you, the planets in Freelancer..don't orbit anything really. They just sit there. Tradelanes would be dragged into the sun if the planets etc moved too since they are too small in mass to move at the same speed as the planets (and so keep the same shape) and not get dragged into the sun.

Horizontal tradelanes? What you thinking?! I don't want to go through a series of tubes mentioned in another thread! Unless it's for the vertigo; I like losing were I am in space, though it's easy to get orientated again.
