A previous mod I was apart of had an awesome system for buying stocks. This relied on a fluxuating economy however, the prices changed every week at random with a server updater. Much like the one we currently have as DSUpdate. You can choose from a wide assortment of stocks, each week the stock changes at random in different values, making the said item purchased (stock in form of cargo from planets) at a certain time, worth less than it might be at a later time.
Example:
Quote:Day 1: Leo buys 600 shares of DSE for 100 credits a share, equaling 60,000 credits.
Day 2: Leo does not purchase anything, because DSE stock dropped from 100 credits a share, to 20 credits a share.
Day 3: Leo sells 30 stock in DSE as the value of DSE stock goes from 20 credits a share to 2000, giving him back his 60,000 credits, and still owning 30 stock.
Day 4: DSE stock worth falls to a record 5 credits a share. Leo continues to hold on to his stock, hoping the stocks will climb once again.
This would all have to be run via the updater and have some system setup to randomly generate a new price for the stocks. It worked well on the server I played at before, but the updater was very buggy, and hardly ever worked right, so stocks were a pain with that mod, but the update here works flawlessly.
Thoughts?

You fear oblivion. Yet you forget. The universe remembers every atom of your being. Even dust hums your name in the dark. Roleplay is dead. Long live Powertraders and PvP I guess.
I think this is an interesting idea. I definitely think it would add some depth to the universe. However, overall, I'm not a big fan. First off all I feel it would detract from the RP a little. Stock markets fluctuate because of real world events which we actually have on the server, for it to be fluctuating randomly would be sort of annoying.
Now it could be made to change with events but that would take a whole lot of work.
My other concern is that it is too much like gambling, except if it truly is random (within a range) it shouldnt be to hard to figure out what the range is for all the stocks, buy low, sell high and be rich, and then no one will have to trade anymore, I think we definitely dont want this. Also as other have said about the casino idea we dont want people playing just for that reason.
Despite all this I still think it is an interesting idea.
I agree with Tazuras that it shouldn't replace trading at all.
I should have clarified that I like the idea only if it's for fun, and isn't all that profitable.
Maybe you could possibly make a max of 10mil if you had bought the maximum number of stocks at the lowest set price and sold at the highest. If it's a once a week thing that's not enough to dent the need to trade, but still enough of an incentive to participate.
how about just making a new cargo commodity named "***** Stock", with the ***** being the name of a major corporation within the game. DSE Stock, Interspace Stock, ALG Stock, etc. etc.
you would have to carry this cargo with you for long periods of time, making it risky business for actual traders, but it would be easy for the developers/admins to simply raise or lower the price of the stock commodity each week. Each stock commodity would sell/buy for the same amount on every location in the game, so you could cash in regardless of where you're at... but you'd only be able to buy stock at the station headquarters of that corporation.
EDIT:
Though, I can imagine a stock market entrepeneur getting a Barge from the admins, 25k cargo space, buying up 25,000 units of stock at 100 credits each (2.5 million credits spent), and then waiting till they're worth 1000 credits each to sell... 22.5 million credits in pure profit =P Imagine if the credit amounts were even higher...

I'd exclude unfitting bases from this list, like the SCRA, who are completely anticapitalistic.:PAnyways a good idea if the system would be fiddled out a bit.
Just a note: this sytem would fit perfectly in a project, we're working on currently.;)

Just thinking, but stock could be adjusted depending on the activity of the player faction attatched to it? So Bowex's stocks would be worth more if we spent a solid week on convoys with a full roster?
1) You have to APPLY for the Barge, ie have a good reason.
2) It can't dock pretty much anywhere to buy them.
3) It can't dock pretty much anywhere to sell them.
