After some heated discussion of what life would be like in Sirius. I was now curious to see what others think.

I'm now looking some examples of what life on Manhattan would be like according to people around here, while considering the freelancer universe.

For me it has always been dystopian and full with corporations while you'd also have plenty of lower classes around to fulfill the lesser jobs a society would require. Anyone causing the slightest of mess or simply being in the way for a nice new construction project gets shipped off to Pittsburgh or Houston. In short, Manhattan is simply our current day New York with a sci-fi jacket on, at least to me.

Every scifi's rendition of a world run by greedy megacorporations that only care about their bottom line and to whom human life means absolutely nothing.

I'd say it is far from an utopia. Even in the distant nonexistent future, I doubt a perfect place can be achieved. No matter how you try to shovel the poor to other planets, someone always gets the short end of the stick.

Social stratification leading to a dystopian feel. Happens due to wealth gaps, which is obvious in Liberty.

Manhattan is Freelancer's version of Coruscant - a planet wide booming city, where most of the elites in Liberty live. While the place itself is far from perfect, most of its 'nasty' businesses and needs have been moved to Texas.

Manhattan is a better planet to live on in Liberty as long as you can afford it - meaning, that it's a planet for the middle class. If you get too poor somehow, well, too bad - you get into debts, become undesirable and get moved to Texas.

EDIT: The problem is, that working for the corporations in Freelancer usually sucks and people get exploited as 'wage slaves' unless they are really lucky. Living on Manhattan might give you some nice and relatively sheltered life, but you either sell your soul to the corporation, slave for it or both.

Every planet would realistically have pretty much every socioeconomic environment possible, because they're planets.
I feel like a lot of people don't really think about the scale a planet implies.
There are nations/counties/cities that are desparately poor on Manhattan. There are ludicrously ritzy resorts frequented by the 0.01% on Pittsburgh.

Planets in Freelancer are rather one-sided. They have one climate and one theme.

You can see it by every world have its own 'function', instead of being 'complicated' as our Earth is.

Still fits with what I have been playing all these years.

Hearing it's just elitist living there having a good life seriously backfired on me.

Even with planets just having one theme there is plenty of room for interpreting what life would be like and I think there would always be different classes with different levels of freedom.

Living in Liberty is quite difficult for Joe Average - very hard to find a job as Liberty outsourced a lot of industry to Kusari, privatized profit-driven police, expensive livehoods, greedy and slavering corporations and rampart criminality. Liberty might be ironically one of the worst Houses to live in, unless you happen to be a woman living in Kusari.

Liberty is producing Rogues and Xenos faster than they are capable of killing them and they have been steadily growing over the past decades.
