Had a thought, we have the shield busting weapons that can also drain weapons energy. We have thrusters which can give a boost to speed. Any way to create a weapon that when it hits a player reduces their speed.
Idea would be a chaingun that when locked on a player can be used to slow them down or eventually hold them in place as long as the weapon's energy holds up.
It would be useful, but a fighter could stop a BS that way. You couldn't change it because if each ship has the same mass, then each would stop equally.
I am a long-absent Supreme Commander, Executive Commander, Grand Admiral, Fleet Admiral, and Captain in the mighty Hellfire Legion. I have returned, and am on an urgent mission from Drake Thastus to return the Legion to its former glory, and to claim the galaxy for its own. Only then will I be able to rest.

BUt something of that cailibre would, this is real-space wise, could not be mounted on a fighter. I would think a BS-Cruiser only weapon. Or mabey gunboat only, to give them an extra punch against fighters.

Likely cruiser or higher since a gunboat holding a BS in place would be a little odd.
and probably wouldn't do the gunboat any good... I like the idea, but i agree as a frigate/BS only weapon, because they are the one that are really diadvanted by lack of manuver. However, i think it should draw crazy crazy power, or it would be too cheap.

I like the idea, but there has to be a way for the fighter to be able to break the lock, and it would need to be difficult to get it in the first place. If it weren't fighters would be obsolete.

Energy drain, Ship Recharge vs the thruster drain would be the key there, would need the weapon such that to hold a ship in place drains energy such that the lock couldn't be maintained when the energy reserve was near 0.
My thinking would be that the tractor hold would be maintained only while constant fire is applied but as soon as the beam sputters (ie losing power) then able to escape by afterburner thrust.
Ya, definitely need ability to escape at some point so that we don't get people being held in place for excessive amounts of time in a taunting/terrorising fashion.
Would it be possible to drain thruster energy with this weapon? I'm not sure non-cruise speed could be affected.
That way the possibilty of escape via cruise would still be there but the maneuverability of the smaller ships would be reduced.
however interesting thought, that weapon would be the death of the smaller ships and if it would not solve the cruise running thing... it's pretty much useless. I'm more for that 'interdictor gun' I mentioned in the suggestions.
