During SP, the story takes you to the outside of the Dyson shere, it's pretty much a huge system with a wall/ceiling/floor running through it.
Now, i had some ideas, that would take a hell of a lot of work and probably wont be implemented, but could work.
Imagine if every capital planet: Manhattan, Berlin, Malta, Crete, had it's own 'system' similar to the Sphere entrance, only the 'wall' would be the ground and the general model would be a cityscape.
there could be multiple station on the ground, with the docking bays intergrated into the buildings, so you land on , for example, the DSE base on manahttan, or the police base, so planets can belong to multiple factions.
It would be in atmosphere, with NPC's flying about, awesome atmospheric battles (seeing as the ships can defy gravity in the cutscenes anyway)
the problems would be:
-ejected cargo un-realisticly floating about
-blown-up ship parts flying without the pull of gravity
-if NPC's/player touch the ground, what happens?
-restricting Capital ships and transports that can't keep themselves in the atmoshere out
-if someone jsut cruized off the map, what would happen?
Flying about in the Atmosphere with multiple bases per planet would be awesome and be a very nifty RP feature. But would probably not be put in coz' of the enourmas amount of work required.
Alternitavely we could just put multiple docking rings for planets (for different factions)
its been done in another mod - and while the idea is a nice one - it cannot really be realized properly in FL.
firstly - you may have noticed, its just a starscape - you never get close to the surface. - so any station you got in a system must still be "floating" high above the ground.
secondly - it adds another system - hence stretching the playerbase.... without a beneficial effect other than adding "just a feature".
if freelancer supported different physics - like adding horrible manouvering for warships in low atmosphere, but good in space - but adding larger fighters with wings for good atmospheric steering it could at least add something, but freelancer doesn t know anything of that sort.
so it would be a nice eye candy - without any further use other than possibly empyting systems of players and adding more confusion to police chars that need to police more systems now.

The outside of the sphere is a physical object...the system you get to through the nomad gate in Minor (Minor which contains Toledo if there is more than one...those multiple systems, same names get me all confused). You can fly up to, ram, etc. it. Dunno if/how that would affect the placement of stations, but it's more than just a starscape.
Unfortunately, the physics of ships in the atmosphere would be an issue.
I'm going to take a look through the blackhole mod files. Last time I used it, it dragged me towards it. Something like that might work well for gravity.
It would be very nice if there was a game such as freelancer, but melded with an FPS. So we could control characters, and interact on foot. (maybe even have some gun battles, get light arms used:))
Not as detailed as Garrysmod, but i dont know of a real game that does what i said above...
Trying to expand Freelancer into more envrioments is no easy task, perhaps pointing towards Infinity, as that looks more of where this is going.
Problem is everyone wants the perfect awesome game, but it's not going to happen with Freelancer. Unless the community has a massive shift to a new game engine, with Freelancer models and such, we're stuck with this. Even if we did have the ability to modify the source and expand on it, it takes a long time for even a large dev team to get that far.
While it's a good idea, personally I don't think we need it for Freelancer. It's a space sim game, and we are kinda starting to run out of room for new systems to be placed.
