Well, in Vanilla, every system had a different background (a.k.a. starmap or starsphere) - though similarities are seen throughout the Houses or Edge Worlds, no Vanilla system looks like another - I'm speaking about the background only here, sun(s), stations and planets of course do make each system unique.
In Discovery, we enjoy a multitude of new systems, but every single new system has the starsphere of an already existing one - Omega 49 with the background of Tau 37 is an example.
My question is, shouldn't we change the starspheres of at least some of the new systems? I'm not talking about every single one - I know most are fitting well and we've grown accustomed to them.
Systems that are far away from the core of Sirius though, such as new Edgeworlds, Guard Systems and Gallia Systems should differ from the rest, in my opinion - especially Gallia as a major House deserves some kind of 'own' theme.
This thread is not about if it is possible - it is. (see below)
I'd rather like to ask the community if we should do it. I for one would welcome some visual alternatives to the already existing variety.
After I got a short tutorial by Seth on the how-to, I tried it out myself this afternoon - importing custom textures for system backgrounds works fine. Here are some screenshots of Manchester - with different starsphere each time:
These are only images with custom/modified textures by me (and these are pretty crappy - I suppose I could create something better with a bit more time) replacing vanilla textures - it's also possible to create an entire starsphere from scratch in order to get other results. I'm no modeller though, so I'd need a dev's hand there:P
Wow Sleip! I never realised you would produce such great results so quickly!
As I said, you can get the models but due to some...problems I can't get my Ms3d working until I do a system restore, unless anyone has a working keygen for 1.8.2 (Gurjivs one doesn't work), which means I can't get the CMP in a model format for you.
However, I can get it on my other PC, I'll just need a few days. By the way, I'd like to use those in my guard systems if ya don't mind.
yeah, especially Dauphine, needs some starsphere love. It's so ugly right now. (one of the reason I couldnt stand making a bret char. apart from camb and manchester, all their systems are so ugly...)

Seth
actually, mine works. speak to me over skype, ill walk you through it.
Ioha, as usual, awesome work man. i'll definitely bring this up on the dev forums, since this would be something awesome, even if its aesthetical, gallia needs its own custom starscape.

That violet starscape would make a totally awesome Nomad system background. Massive Kudos to you for making those things Sleipnir.
EDIT: Just for a laugh, if you do Gallic starscapes, could you edit in a cloud that looks like cheese/a bottloe of wine somewhere inconspicuous in one of the system? That really would be awesome.
These are all awesome. Much prefer stuff like this to 'overdesigned' systems. You can make a very plain, simple system awesome with something like this.
I take that as a 'yes, continue to explore the art of starsphering'
As said, the above are the result of only about two hours playing around with some textures I got from my photos (clouds are amazing objects...).

(Thanks Gurj)
Sorry mate, gotta cook up that tomato sauce I have here first. Will be back after my dinner:)
