The Discovery team would like to ask everyone not to promote either Discovery mod or server forums belonging to other Freelancer game servers, or in-game on other server. Freelancer player base is shrinking and it's not really a nice attitude towards the other mods and/or servers to pull their players over to Discovery. Everyone has the right to choose freely the mod they like without being pushed to. We do allow advertizing of other Discovery servers on this forum (which is nothing bad), and we do allow to advertize other mods and servers in the form of forum threads in selected forum sections. So, if you like to post anything Discovery-related on forums belonging to other communities, you should follow similar rules that exist in those communities.

Also, please do not fall for provocations. Never participate in any flame wars related to Discovery on other forums, and never start those wars. Like it's said on our main page announcement, our members and our team should be setting an example of correct and friendly behaviour, regardless of what other communities do to us (and to others).

Some creators of other FL mods (we prefer not to be specific) experience bad feelings when people from other communities request features from their mods to be added into Discovery mod. Please respect that. Try to imagine that you invented something great, you spent a lot of time on it and you would like to enjoy it exclusively, at least for a while. Some people might have different points of view, but the authors' one matters in this case.

Badmouthing or critisizing other mods on these forums also doesn't help anyone even if this was a neutral ground which of course it isn't. We already requested the moderators to be especially attentive of discussions related to other mods.

Now, I'm leaving this thread open for your comments, just bear in mind that all these issues had a negative impact on the reputation of Discovery Gaming Community within the whole Freelancer Community and that's definitely not what we want. We should stay together to keep Freelancer alive for as long as possible and therefore we should respect each other.

Thanks for your attention.

I think a rule should be made not to bash other mods on this forum/server, however, we should not become like other mods where talking about other mods is forbidden.

Anything I say is not intended as offensive, and to try and deliberately misinterpret it as such would be an attempt at trolling via misrepresentation.

It's not a conspiracy, it's localised bias. They're not intelligent enough to form a conspiracy.

Aye... Bashing other mods (no matter how bad we may think they are, personally I don't) is just bad... As was stated. But what if we want to praise them? That's got me.

If I understood correctly, he's not saying we cant say nice things about other mods here on the Disco forums. He's asking everyone not to promote Disco on other mod forums.

There's nothing wrong with praising other mods. I've seen a lot of threads like that here.

So does this mean we should not suggest adding features present in other mods on these forums or just shouldn't approach non-discovery modders about them giving us those features?

Because if it is the former, well it just wouldn't sit quite right with me I dont believe...

What Maj is saying is that when Disco members go to other freelancer forums, to make sure they don't do anything to promote Disco while there, also to not speak ill of other freelancer mods while here 'in-house'

We do not need our members to go to other sites to provide outside advertising as the strength of our mod speaks for itself & doesn't need it. Furthermore, talking smack of other mods here at home would make us appear as snobbish kneebiters to our many outside visitors.

In a nutshell, Disco is only one part of the freelancer community, & we all have a responsibility to lead by humble example & treat everyone in the freelancer community the way we would expect to be treated.

It's simply the right thing to do.

Expanded and edited this post to suit our policies.

Yes, it's true that simple promoting is not something that we shouldn't do. Yet, I must remind that all relations with other communities that can be considered official must go through my approval. So, you cannot post any "official" news for Discovery mod and Discovery 24/7 server without my consent. If I'm not available, a responsible person from the team will be in charge of such relations.

Same applies to resolving any conflicts related to other communities, and large community relations projects.

Thank you.

Personally I don't go around other boards, in fact I don't recall ever being a member on TLR forums and the like. As long time modder making maps and other things for other games in the past I feel there is something wrong going on around , may be it's just a feeling though, it's hard to say really. As much as I recall my previous modding there was always some nice and friendly in the groups I've been at: people shared their ideas, their findings, lots of tutorials and people helped each other, learned from reverse-engineering and like that, so at the end everyone improved, increased skill and the quality of their works risen literally with every single update. And if someone had found a way to overcome some game limitation it became quickly well-known. Perhaps things are quite different here, or perhaps it's the times, at least so it would look from a bunker I sit at, hard to say if it's true really. Kind of a sad feeling got to it all myself, to be honest.

Some people who develop things for their mod do not do so for everyone to enjoy, just for the people who play their mod.
Considering how easy it is to find out said things by looking through the mod files, it's actually just asking for trouble.

If everyone just kept their knowledge to themselves and didn't learn from each, from reverse engineering etc as Treewyrm said, then Freelancer modding would be still be back at the beginning.

Advertising Disco on other forums is ok by what Maj said, just as long as it's within the guidelines of the forum that it is posted on.

In any case, go to the Starport if you want modding help or ideas or even to pick up new things really. The people there generate a far more friendly atmosphere for sharing ideas and modding things than I've encountered elsewhere.
