My tutorial, StellarVisses’ guide on how not to get sieged, has sparked debate about the previous siege on Scaglainne Oir. I would appreciate it if all related discussion could be moved to this thread, as this isn’t a tutorial thread.

Now, my opinion on that siege:

The players who bought the base in question failed to account for the factions present in the system or the situation in Dublin at all. The Mollys had finally driven out BMM by destroying Graves and the Jump Gate. Bretonia, a house in an economic downward spiral, relied on the gold mined there to stay afloat. Now, losing access to the system, they imposed an embargo on any ship entering Dublin, allowing only their corps and the Bounty Hunters to enter.

The base, originally named Scaglainne Oir, was formerly known as Goldgeist under the BMM IFF and was registered under the Bretonian base registry. With the changes to Dublin in 5.0, the owners of Goldgeist sold the base to a freelancer group that renamed it Scaglainne Oir and changed the IFF to Freelancer in an attempt to comply with the Mollys.

As the Mollys were preparing to declare on it, the base was put up for sale, stopping the siege from happening. The new owner was an indie Molly group named the Bretonia Rogue Ragers. The base was left alone (Would you attack this chap?), but that peace lasted only until RPA saw unknown people flying to the base and using it. They sent a comm, only to find out that Scaglainne Oir was under new management by a group of freelancers who were unknown to the RPA|. They were opening the base as a Freeport. The only course of action for the cornered Mollys was to declare on it. The Artemis Alliance, who failed to make contact with the Mollys, tried to negotiate a way out. Unfortunately for them, they were unknown to the RPA|, and their promise that no one would be able to dock meant nothing. Why would the Mollys trust an unknown group of freelancers?

Now, why didn’t BAF| move to assist a registered base? Well, it broke the law by being a freelancer base in Dublin, which is a restricted space military zone only allowing Bretonian corps to construct bases inside. I’m sure that BAF| would have been the first to siege that base, but server rules prevented them from doing so. Why would they make an exception for a group of unaffiliated freelancers trying to set up a Freeport? A Freeport in Dublin would hinder everyone’s efforts to make it their own system, so they advised the Aegis Initiative not to enter the conflict. (Also, the money provided was a small amount.) Aegis, being a Bounty Hunter group, values the government of a House more than a group of freelancers, so they followed the advice.

As for the Sails, they were there just for the pew (to be honest, it was fun). They had no intention of actually defending the base, even allowing the Mollys to shoot it to the damage cap at one point.

Beyond this, there is no big conspiracy of official factions keeping Dublin and the gold from the rest of the players. To quote my own guide: this base was in a bad location, and the Artemis Alliance did not reach out to any faction active in the system.

As the one who led the communications on behalf of Aegis, I appreciate this post as it hits the nail on the head.

To set the record straight, Aegis is not a morally sound organization. They care about one thing: Money. They have little to no regard for anyone besides the ones that line their pockets.

Aegis has an extremely lucrative contract with the Bretonian Government, forged by years of collaboration. Aegis is much more keen to please them, given the difference in credits, compared to a random base in the Dublin system. They will never have any obligation to defend an installation, unless the price is right.

This was not some conspiracy between staff and factions. This was an opportunity for us to demonstrate that Aegis is NOT just a group of /1 /2ers for the sake of shooting. We think about and dictate our actions based on the roleplay we have decided to enact.

If anyone has issues with that, they are more than welcome to DM me directly.

Yes we did reach out to ones in the system and we also stipulated to the RPA that we would adhere to their demands on that base and they decided just to seige it anyway.

Our Roleplay was sound about what we intended to do with the base and if they had played along with the Roleplay they would have realised it would have been beneficial for them to do so.

Anyway that some of our side of the story and to be quite frank ….. do you know ALL of the details ……. I think not

Player bases should not be having their names, IFFs or locations changed, outside of reasonable small quality of life adjustments, such as correcting one with wonky placement, or in response to mod changes outside of player control. Buying a base from a player and then expecting it to be put somewhere else with a new name and IFF is ridiculous.

They were permanent for a long time, until all of a sudden they started being granted for frivolous reasons, which continues. The server rules still say they are permanent, but then also go on to link to post about how you can do them anyway, which is contradictory. Say they're permanent, or link to a post explaining how you change them, not both. But say they're permanent, because they should be.

If a player wants a base in a certain location, with a certain name, with a certain IFF, then they should go and build one there. Base purchases should be made on the understanding that none of that will be changed just because you bought it.

All I see are excuses for the collectively criminal behavior of the involved factions in Dublin.
I admitted that the "conveniently contrived RP" is technically sound.

What I'm not seeing is any valid rebuttals to the system being on an effective lockdown by OF's and Staff for their personal benefit and to the detriment of other players on the server who are not so well connected to the good ol' boys network.

The facts and effects of these issues, as stated, make anyone using logic and not obfuscating them for their own benefit or their allies, know that this isn't just conspiracy.

That being said, there is no benefit to an ongoing pissing contest over the issue, especially since the progenitor of this thread is an allied sieger of the base in question, so also obviously has reason to defend & excuse the actions taken.
There will be no intellectual honesty on the subject here.

This whole issue could've been fairly easily resolved if there had simply been communication with the Mollys before the purchase of the base that there was an intent to purchase said base, which had already changed hands several times recently and offers nothing to any of the factions involved in the conflict over Dublin.
