Hello, I am a player who played freelancer in 2004, beat it single player and loved it. Then me and my friends moved on to WoW,CSS...newer games. My friends and I decided to play freelancer again, and after reading these forums for a few hours, quite frankly i cannot wait to get started. My friend and I are going to either pirate (which is robbing freighters right?) or smuggle, either way something illegal. We both relish combat and love to fight, but are going to involve ourselves in the RP side as well. I am here looking for guidance and or answers to various questions.
1.Although it may seem trivial, because of our WoW heritage we always like to aspire to become the most powerful;essintially, what are some of the best ships around in the different classes, and what is a bomber?
2.Considering we will ALWAYS be playing together, and hopefully with friends we make playing this game, what are some factions or what I have gathered reading (clans) or whatever the smaller more defined groups are called. Which of these groups will fit our illegal, robbing, fighting style of play.
3.Although it will be hard being attacked at the early stages, what is the best way for me to acquire one of the ships you hopefully listed above, and how fast can me and my friend do so?

Thanks very much for your help everyone!

Quote:1.Although it may seem trivial, because of our WoW heritage we always like to aspire to become the most powerful;essintially, what are some of the best ships around in the different classes, and what is a bomber?

A very bad first question to ask around here, trying to get the biggest, baddest ship is the callingcard of every bad player on this server.

You will find, however, that most vessels are pretty well balanced against most others. There's no real ship that stands out in any particular ship class. I would suggest you pick a faction whose RP you think fits you, and use the ships and equipment available to that faction. Cross-faction ships are not permitted in 90% of cases here.

To the second part of your quote: Bombers are slightly larger than fighters (or in the case of the barghest, MUCh larger than fighters), are slower/less manuverable, but have heavy armor and the weaponry needed to combat large capital ships such as cruisers and battleships. Still, no bomber is effective alone, to take out the largest ships you need a small swarm of bombers that know what they're doing. Bombers are generally considered the most effective pirating vessels, because they can take out transports more quickly than fighters - you just have to be careful of the lawfuls flying fighters, as they'll wreck you pretty fast.

Quote:2.Considering we will ALWAYS be playing together, and hopefully with friends we make playing this game, what are some factions or what I have gathered reading (clans) or whatever the smaller more defined groups are called. I would honestly say "stay out of liberty" - there are too many players there already, and it's the hub of all bad RP on the server.

You would be more well suited to finding a faction in Rheinland, Bretonia, or Kusari - my vote goes to bretonia/rheinland, as most trade passes through those houses (making pirating more efficient there) - kusari is mostly dead as far as trading is concerned, but there's still plenty of lawful vs unlawful action in that area.

For Rheinland pirate groups, you're best off going with the Red Hessians, as they have their own bomber and fighter available (unioners and bundschuh only have fighters for themselves, though you can always use civilian ships).

For Bretonia, I would suggest the Mollys, as they too have their own fighters and bombers.

For Kusari, you can either be a semi-lawful hogosha or farmer's alliance team, or you can go to the unlawful blood dragons or golden chrysanthemums. Nice thing about hogosha/FA is that the lawfuls wont generally stop you from pirating people, so long as the target you're pirating is a foreigner.

Your best option when starting out is to either become a miner or trader. Save the smuggling, piracy, and combat for later on when you've acquired and fully outfitted the proper ship.

Mining is generally easier, and in some cases more profitable, than most trade routes - trading also has the downside of piracy risk, as other pirates will be looking to take your money. Missions are not a good source of money in this game, but you will have to do some in order to build up reputation with the faction you want to join.

My suggestion for starting out is to mine silver from the asteroid fields in the colorado system, and sell it back on manhattan in the new york system, makes a decent profit and after a few runs you'll have enough money to buy a small freighter for trading (or further mining).

Read the rules carefully before you interact with anyone, especially before you start playing and robbing or fighting people. Discovery is a role-play server - admittedly combat forms a large part of it, but if you don't role-play, your time here will be short-lived and unenjoyable.
1. A ship is powerful depending on what it is used for. A gunboat is powerful for pirating, but gets chewed up easily by a cruiser or two or more organised fighter/bombers. A fighter is good against freighters and bombers and can dodge the gunfire of a large ship quite easily, but is vulnerable to gunboats. You will never find the Swiss Army Knife of ships because everyone is restricted in some way. Try ships out, see what suits you best. Bigger is not necessarily better. A bomber is a powerful, well armoured, but inagile small ship custom built to down large ships. Some are excellent for piracy.
2. Illegals - robbing, fighting? Depends on where you choose to base yourself. Try joining several factions or working with players in game.
3. There is no fast route to make money, and you will never find the Holy Grail of ships. Just enjoy the game in all its forms.

I didnt mean the "best" ship, I meant perhaps the top 3 bombers,or heavy fighters. Or perhaps if their is someone that knows of a list of all the ships and their factions, thank your for the help guys.

You could always join the BAF (bretonian armed forces). They aren't an unlawful faction like you are looking for, but they see their fair share of action with the war against kusari. They get to stop all (minus the zoners, IMG, and allied corps going to friendly bases) the traders trying to go to Kusari through the tau systems, and they offer hands on combat training for whatever ship you get.

Every bomber has it's up and downs. Granted some are better than others, but on the whole they are fairly even. You should really choose a faction because you like it's backstory and want to create role play based off of it, not because of its ships. You should also consider what type of play you are most likely to encounter playing in that faction. Most areas in the game have different pro's and cons to playing there, that do shift over time. So I would recommend playing in that area independently for a while before committing to a faction.

You should know there is a generic pirate ID that would allow you to pirate anywhere in the game and get a feel fro it if you like. Just be sure to mind this.

Edit: Actually the pirate ID does not seem to be covered in this chart... interesting....

All right, I guess ill just explore the different factions. I read a post where some what to me seemed to be smaller groups (player created groups perhaps?) were outfitting new recruits with ships and weapons! Maybe it was a scam Im really not sure. I am going to start playing 2-3.5 hours a day varying starting later this week. Hopefully some people will add me as friend incase I have in-game problems. Thanks again everybody.

Well your questions are heard very often. Your first question will give some folks pause. We are an RP server. That means Role play is more important, to some if not most, then power. PVP is secondary here. As for the best ships. Well since your faction dictates which ships you can use, it is best to find out which faction you want to play before choosing a ship type. Information on all the NPC and most of the Offical factions can be found here

Discovery Wiki

Since you want to be pirates then you are really looking at the Corsiars, Outcasts, Blood Dragons, Mollys, Red Hessains, Unioners, LWB, Hogosha, Golden Chrysanthemums (Female only), Gaians, Libery Rogues, Xenos and Lane hackers. (Sorry if I missed any). The two biggest groups are the Corsairs and Outcasts. Now they all have established RP and diplomacy. Not saying that you can not do your own thing but going against what has already been brought forth will put you at odds with the rest of those folks and will see you hunted down. So do your research first.

Now within each Freelancer NPC faction there may be several Official and Unofficial player factions. Official factions have gone through a process and have the Admins blessing on their RP. Unofficial factions can be a groups of folks who just like to play together to a group going for official status. Again the Wiki can also help you there. Also the forums will also have information about all the different PC factions

Here is the Forum for the official faction recruiment

Official faction recruiment threads

In these threads you can see what type of sips each faction flies. You can also find some of the ship info on the Wiki but since we are currently in a new beta the information there has not yet been fully updated and will most likely not be until the official release of version 4.85.

As for getting those ships, well first you have to trade to get the cash or run missions. At this time trading is the best bet. You start with your Starflyer and work your way up from there. Mining is bine worked on and to get the best bonuses you need spcific ships with specific tags and ID's. We have hundreds of ships to choose from but each ship has restrictions on it's use.

Last but most importantly please read our rules. If you break the rules you will be hit with sanctions.

I know I did not really answer any of your questions but the information I did give you will help you with your time here.
