Asset Request: '\S/'IRV-Starfall
A record detailing efforts to obtain an Independent Research Vessel
Starfliers Asset Request Record

Requestee's Name:
  • Nataly Pearsall
What kind of vessel have you obtained?
  • "Bustard"-Class
How will this benefit the Starfliers goal of exploration and research?
  • To give high command a tl;dr version: It will serve as a more robust counterpart to the Sol, being able to autonomously sustain our researchers and vessels in remote areas of Sirius, or help with the recovery of damaged vessels of all kind given its jumpdrive capabilities. I'll go into more specific things down below.

Choice of hull: After decently long discussions between myself and other members and personal experiences from my time before Starfliers, it was clear that we'd need a highly modular hull that could be kitted out with as many custom modules as possible. It being commonly available on the open market is a nice added bonus, making it easy to acquire albeit expensive.

    Internal Modules:

Thanks to Renzu we were able to fully customize the Starfall's internals, providing it with additional shielded cargospace for potentially radioactive or corrosive samples or technology. To further improve both comfort and long term sustainability of prolonged research missions we had her outfitted with hydroponics and additional crew quarters, enabling up to fifty researchers and other mandatory personnel to stay aboard the ship pretty much indefinitely.

We've had both the engine and power generators rebuilt to provide redundancy failsaves in case of system failure, and the ability to use essentially any kind of fuel at different efficiencies. Additional sub-generators for life support and the cargobay's shielding have been added to ensure some degree of operability in a worst-case scenario.

The fire control systems have been entirely removed to make space for additional hangar expansions that will allow the Starfall to host a multitude of research probes, snubcrafts and even transport-sized vessels for refueling or supply shipments. While it may lack the heavy machinery to fully repair critically damaged vessels, it is more than capable of sustaining those that it will be equipped with, or make rescue operations easier by restoring basic flying capabilities to vessels lost in space.

    External Modules:

A big focus was put on improving the carrier's resistance to radiation and asteroid impacts via additional high-density armor plating that has been added in critical areas. So far I only have a rough idea where the limits are, but prolonged proximity within radiation clouds or close to irradiated areas should be the least of our worries with this upgrade.

Renzu has also prepared the Starfall's external hardpoints to mount the biggest scanner arrays any of the Starflier's vessels has ever seen. They can be integrated to work together, triangulating distant anomalies or penetrating deep into a planet's crust to analize its contents. Due to the modular approach Renzu took, we are able to swap hardpoint equipment with minimal downtime, ensuring that we'll always have the right tool for the mission.

Thanks to Bristol C&M we were able to both repair two modular docking modules, as well as attach two brand new ones to further expand the carrier's hold for probing equipment such as unmanned drones or two-seater rovers for surface expeditions.

And last but not least I asked for an extendable airlock to be mounted, which allows the Starfall to dock with larger vessels, like the Sol. This should make for an easy way of replacing the crew during long term deployments or save us from having to use ferries go back and forth.

Suffice to say that changes will most definitely happen to this setup in the future, but that's within the nature of the ship: Adaptability to whatever we need to do. I think we will be made aware of potential points of improvement once this beauty has been through a deployment or two. I'll keep an eye on promising contractors to ensure that we'll always have someone capable of performing whichever facelifts the Starfall needs. It's been a pleasure to work on this project so far, and I sincerely hope that it'll prepare us for any reality defying discovery we may come across in the future.

Efforts made to obtain the ship:

Drafting and construction
  • Initial project idea
  • Shiptype proposals and important modules (including followup transmissions)
  • Tendering of ship manufacturers
  • Detailed construction limitations and customisations for the shipyard
Refitting and additional module installation
  • First contact with Renzu Company, provider of refitting services
  • In depth refitting process with both internal and external modules being adjusted by Renzu
  • Restoration and purchase of docking modules by and from Bristol C&M
