Akutan Production Facility

Built as a supplementary salvage depot by Bristol Constructions & Manufacturing, based in part on the widely distributed Cochrane template, Akutan Production Facility has since expanded its scale of economy heavily. With operations including manufacture of ship components and assembly of the well-known Bulwark Heavy Explorer, the station has become a well-known station on the Bering route.

History

Founded in 823 by Bristol C&M, Akutan Production Facility began life as a staging ground for the numerous salvage operations which were ongoing in Bering. Providing storage location for the scrap material and salvaged components, which would often go on to Bristol Bay Station or Alster Shipyard for refurbishment, the station steadily grew.

With the design of the Bulwark-class Heavy Explorer in October 834 however, Akutan found itself well-suited for partial production and assembly of the vessel. Expansion came rapidly to the station, with many elements of its construction seen as being better kept away from Bristol Bay’s traffic flow as well as concerns arising from the assembly and initiation of reactor systems in such close proximity to the salvage operations that were still ongoing at that junction. Since then, Akutan Production Facility has accounted for over 30% of the Bulwark’s construction per hull, no mean feat considering Alster’s capacity.

Ship Production

Equipped with a shipyard installation that spans several of the standard docking ports, Akutan produces a consistent supply of propulsion systems for free sale as well as installation of equipment on board the Bulwark hulls such as interior electricals, plumbing, communication systems, and other necessary pieces of gear. In addition, the station provides testing and final certification for the vessels before they go on to be sold to various customers.

Salvaging & Repairs

Due to the Hudson War and the Scouring of Bering, the system provides a large amount of salvage - with this being the initial reason for Akutan Production Facility’s construction and location, it comes as little surprise that the station continues to serve this role alongside the expanded foundries at Bristol Bay Station. Salvage vessels often use Akutan as a waystation or repair depot before going into the Anadyr and Norton fields, returning to deposit the most valuable pieces of equipment at Akutan for refurbishment away from the busy trade lanes at Bristol Bay.

Exploratory teams often base out of Akutan for surveys of the southern portions of Bering, evaluating a number of larger hulks for valuable equipment or salvage potential.

Issues

Akutan Production Facility faces constant flights of Liberty Rogues against both its junction and the nearby trade lanes, leading to a distinct presence of Rheinland Military Forces in the local region. Unioner patrols nearby are often involved, though they display little interest in Bristol vessels engaged with the Rogues, often preferring to engage the Rheinland fighters instead. Akutan plays host to a very small security detachment due to this, often relying on Bristol Bay-based patrols against any larger forces.
