The 24 Hours of Cenomanus

OVERVIEW

Named for the ancient city of the Aulerci, known later as Le Mans on ancient Sol, the "Twenty-Four" as it is commonly known is one of longest endurance races in the Sector. It tests not only a pilot's skills but his or her equipment, ability to plan, knowledge of space, and the intuitive bond between pilot and machine. It has also become a testbed for craft manufacturers to demonstrate new standards in both performance and reliability. Starting and finishing in the shadow of the lavishly-designed Versailles above New Paris, it is, at its heart, a true celebration of human engineering.

The Twenty-Four is divided into two classes: the organizationally-focused freighter category and the classic, ego-building or destroying light fighter category. Both are initially sponsored by a small Division of Interspace Commerce offering the following for each class:

First Place: $8,000,000
Second Place: $3,000,000
Third Place: $1,000,000

All corporate or organizational entities are encouraged to register or sponsor a freighter pilot with all sponsoring funds being added directly to the available reward pot for both as well as the ever-desirable opportunity to claim "The Fastest in Sirius" for one year.

Date:

Freighter Class -March 28, 6:30 p.m. UTC

Light Fighter Class -March 28, 8:00 p.m. UTC

Registration:

Each race is expected to last between 40 and 50 minutes. Please plan accordingly before registration.

Conditions and OORP Information:
  • All racers may register with an existing character from any faction (lawful or unlawful) or create a new character for the event.
  • Racers may choose from any light fighter or freighter in the game.
  • Each ship may only mount the following equipment:
    One Cruise Disrupter with a maximum of ten (10) missiles;
One Screamer Mine with a maximum of five (5) mines.
  • Each racer must travel to Waterloo Station, Newark Station, the Roppongi Wreck, and Bonn Station before returning via any path to the line at Versailles Station while taking a screen in front of each checkpoint (except Versailles). The route to and from each checkpoint is up to the racer. Times will remain unofficial until screenshots are posted in this thread.
  • Racers may not group together in-game but may group with another player in a camera ship who can form on the racer for recording purposes.
  • Restocks and repairs are not allowed.

Depending on community feedback, these rules may change. Please bring any comment to the #events-lounge on the Official Discovery Freelancer Discord. I hope to have at least five racers for each class to move forward.

I was very excited to see a race event, but when I saw it was a Sirius-wide endurance race where I'd have to sit down and pre-plan a path from station to station - in effect, the same mental process as powertrading, but applied to racing essentially just for money - well, why not power trade instead.

Flying on my own in the middle of nowhere with no moment-to-moment drama on a racetrack, and nobody to roleplay with save for I guess interrupting eachother with our extremely limited equipment... I dunno, thinking through the experience of playing it, it didn't sound like it was going to approach fun. At least if we're all on the same racetrack, we can interact with each other for an extended period. The roleplay is the reward, not the money. There was a great race event run in early March 2023 by AWES that had a great format in that way, but I'm too lazy to go dig up the page.

If you had spicier rewards than just cash, like rare items, that'd also be cool.

  1. As an occasional racer, I can't see where I could put to use my racing skills - it's a game of F2 & F3. At the same time, that means literally anyone could particiate, and that's good. My plan was to use Earhart shortcut depending on it's exits, and I believe that's an autowin against people who haven't even been there, which is bad. So it's a race for everyone and no one.
  2. The mines and CDs for my taste are unnecessary in a race without a direct route.
  3. No clarification on deaths. I.e. if I die at the Versailles due to 5 people spamming mines around me while docking to the very first trade lane - the race is over for me before it started.
