It's possible, though the 4.85 version doesn't support the storyline.
If you're really keen on having a particular ship from the Discovery mod while playing the game, I think you can simply copy paste the files of the ships you want into your vanilla Freelancer folder.

I tried De-activating 4.85 with the mod manager.... now Freelancer won't runa t all (yes I have an original CD). uninstalled it, removed the Freelancer directory, and the same thing happened... it got just after the movie in the intro then went back to the desktop.
Nothin in the Event logs either.
I CAN load up 4.84 and play single player that way... but I've not been able to get vanilla Freelancer to run since installing 4.85 (not that that is a bad thing )

Any thoughts?
That's strange. It won't work even after a fresh install? Perhaps your installation files are broken, then, and installing the Discovery Mod fixes it up.
Not possible to play SP campaign in 4.85, coz many system layouts have changed. It throws all the scripts out. As for copying and pasting .ini files to Vanilla to get the better ships... *shudders*

highly unlikely as this is an original install disk... I actually bought the game many years ago and sometimes like to do the campaign...
seems I can only do it with 4.84 now...oh well... will report back if I find a cure...
I have just that same problem, though my game is a copy, but no matter what i try, I simply cannot play vanilla anymore, even some mods don't seem to work anymore, though with the discomods, there are no problems.
Freelancer CD is one of the most precious things I have. It is almost impossible to buy it.
But I know there is web site, where you can find fixed version of vanila exe file, that doesn't require CD to play.
It is very useful because if you use CD often it may be destroyed.
