And so after 8 years my PC now won't load Windows. Tried safe mode, tried last known good configuration and all that jazz, but it just won't get past the loading bar screen, it get's so far and just restarts itself.

Other than buying a new PC, which I cannot afford, I have no idea what to do. Any ideas?

re-installing windows is an option, but I'd like to see if folks have any idea what might be wrong before that.

Just some more info when trying to boot into safe mode it gets as far as mup.sys and then restarts.

http://www.aitechsolutions.net/mupdotsysXPhang.html <-- Tried this?

Also, try to find (there are some online - hacked windows and such) a windows live dvd. At least would help you access your computer.

Windows XP? What service pack was it? Home or Professional? Also, I gave you the link to something, download that, burn it, and boot from it. Next, make a backup of all the files you need.

If you need suggestions for backing up, tell me what media creation device you have (CD burner, DVD burner, external HDD, network, etc).

If you can't boot from that, then it's... I don't know why you wouldn't be able to boot from it. Do er' up!

EDIT:
Okay, your message box is full. I used the forum's email thingy. I hope it gets to you. If not, PM me and I can get you my email address... somehow. Skype! You can reach me on skype.

The XP installation CD has a repair option when you put it in?

8 years...That's kind of ridiculous. Sell your underwear, socks, pants, shirts and buy a new computer or something.

The link given above contains thorough info but my first thought was bad hard drive (probably bad sectors). Listen for a grinding or scraping sound when booting up.

Open the case and look at the capacitors--they should be flat or even slightly concave on top--if they are bulged out you got some of that old lot with bad capacitors. I'm not sure if the time frame fits there but it is close to it (when the bad capacitor problem was common.)

If none of these things solve it then I'd say you had a bad voltage under-run or surge (or jiggled something in your case while the PC was running) and it messed your cpu or board up.

Hard drive is simplest to replace and correct--if you're lucky. Eight years is a long time for a HD with constant use. Might keep an eye on that power supply too and consider replacing the watch battery that powers bios when shut down for your motherboard.

Your memories are probably gone, did it reboot spontaneously often?

If so , download a memory test program and run it.

In a pc of that age you wont be able to find memory replacements cheap. You should really build a new machine, buy the components and assemble them, a minimalist config enough to run FL wouldnt cost more then 150 euro. So consider it as it would probably cost as much as new memories for that pc.
