So my computer is rather old. I want to put new RAM in, but I do not know what I should get.
I have 2 x 256mb CL3 400hz. It's DDR2
If I wanted to get 2 x 1gb, does the clock latency and frequency have to be the same?
I know to get DDR2, since my board obviously isn't DDR3, but CL3/400hz is rather old and antiquated and hard to acquire. Let me know if anymore information is required to solve this conundrum.
What motherboard do you have? If you could please look up its specifications and post them, that would help.

Faster RAM will clock down to the slower RAM in your machine automatically. Mixing manufactures isn't a great idea. But if you are just playing Freelancer and creating spreadsheets I don't think you need to worry.
2GB is perfect. Windows XP x86 is capable of 4 GB, but your PC will only recognize 3GB/3.5GB depending on the board. I suspect you will max your board out at 2GB though.
I recommend Transcend or Kingston memory.

All depends on
Motherboard - Determines DDR2, DD3, max capacity, single dual chips and Frequency
CPU - Determines frequency of RAM
OS - Limits size
Usage - Too much Video processing, Games, Browsing, half 'n half - Determines which quality
and how much money do you have - Difference between Corsair/OCZ or Kingston/Mushkin or Apacer/Hynix
or in some cases, determines pretty much everything:)
<span style="font-family:Century Gothic">Spec - Independent Trader</span> Small Transport - Hauling without earning
Current Status: Inactive - Too Much Work and Travel
Though, looking at this - I am depressed. The ram is DDR. That's 1 not 2. As well, the computer specs specify a limit of 1 gb of memory.
However, I am determined to improve my computer, so the original question stands. If I replace all of my memory, and place in 2 x 1 gb <strike>shiny new </strike>old DDR memory, does the memory have to have the same speed as the old memory.
Besides memory, anybody know any ways to cheaply upgrade this system?
