So I've done quite a bit of 3D modeling and I'd like to contribute in this way if I can. Are there any particular ship models that are needed? A new line of ships? Any suggestions? Or should I just start making some models?
excellent models - but you d need to reduce the polygons big time for freelancer. - from what i see, most details on the ships are modelled rather than skinned ( which is detrimental kind of - at least for the lower end computers , even if it does look nicer )
about what we need is
- high quality models without bugs
- replaces for the kushan line of ships ( LF, HF, VHF )
- replaces for the kiith somtaav ships ( freighter, HF, SHF )
- replaces for the kadesh LF and freighter
- replace for the x-shuttle ( low end civilian freighter )
- maybe a good nomad cruiser that doesn t look like a male appendix
- replace for the phantom LF, VHF ( slipstream, ravens claw )
- maybe a replace for the generic HF - marauder ( its the classic BSG cylon raider )
- replace for the turranic LF
i have probably missed some, but its already enough to work on.

fighters would probably range from 500 - 2500 polygons, capital ships something like 8000 - 16000.
for example - i believer the bretonian battleship has 8.5k polygons, but was build for computers of older age. - however.... i d try to keep it around that value, so that every player can still enjoy the game. - when its a rare ship ( like the nomad cruiser ) - which isn t used by too many players... it can surely have more polygons ( but especially this ship will most probably not need many )
capital ships isn t such a delicate matter... most capital ship combat is less about reaction and reflexes where its important to run the game without mini freezes. - but fighters are a different matter. - even slight freezes and choppiness can be detrimental for the gameplay.
so in short - if you CAN ... try to add details with the skinning ( and if possible - use the freelancer default skins, cause freelancer does not preload textures from what i remember ) - and the more custom textures are used, the more the computer needs to refresh them.
just keep in mind - the person most likely to see most details is the pilot himself, cause he will occasionally use the turret view. - but you ll know from experience that in a fighter joust, most you see from your enemy is a quickly expanding "blob of different colours - but not many details.
I would say that spyglass should be revised too, its a great ship but if you look at hackers ship for example gunship, it absolutely doesnt seem to be from same faction.
I think the Spatial is also on the list of ships to get replaced as it's an import.
With that in mind, given the similarities between the X-Shuttle and Spatial's RP background, I think it'd be great if they were in the same ship series!
