Cannon, this is really a question for you. One of the many thousand you probably have to answer per day. Anyway, I digress.

Mooring, at the moment, is basically an instant dock for those who need to get on a planet faster. But would it be possible to say, make it an actual Moor? For example, you're in a, lets say, battleship or a really large freighter. You go to Moor, and you get access to the planets weapons, trade supplies, ect, just as you would with landing, but without the bar and ship vendor on the planet. Same goes for other battleship stations and stations in general. A huge ship like those should not be able to dock on a planet or station at all.

Just me brainstorming again. Happens when I'm stuck on dispatch at work.

Sure, but what about when you decide you want to sell your large ship to buy a smaller one?

When ships moor with stations and planet mooring fields, I would assume they're connected with some sort of gangplank or shuttle. No need to remove the bar and ship vendor. If you wanted to make mooring more realistic, have the ships stay attached to the moors until you undock. I think that is impossible to do w/ out the source code though, because it would require you to be docked and in space at the same time.

There are I believe 4 mooring points on a planetary docking ring.

The problem, however, would be stations. Some of them have only the one mooring point. I suppose waiting in line would make sense. Really, Having a ship bigger than the station itself disappear inside it doesn't do much for the suspension of belief you need to roleplay Freelancer properly.

Also it could be argued the only way to get rid of a big ship is to scrap it. Take everything off it and scuttle the hulk in the Jersey debris field. It's what they do IRL, after all.

Perhaps you could dock with the station, while your ship stays in space ala F1'ing.

Not sure how the coding of that actually works though.

It's possible with FLHook maybe, not sure how but I think it might be possible.

I would imagine it would have to be done via an FLHook interface for buying/selling commodities.

With checks:
  • interfacing ship speed = 0
  • is ID allowed? (e.g. pirate ID cannot buy at the Manhattan mooring fixture.)
  • Is ship in range?
The mooring thing on planets would be "dockable" in the sense that you could come close to it. Lets say within 50 meters?

You could then interface with the planets markets. Including buying ships.
The idea being here that you can restock in space via Comm consoles and credit facilities and need not actually go to groundside.

Equipment:
Not sure how you'd get around equipping equipment on ground, but it doesn't make sense to only be able to on ground. Yes I know the techs are "groundside" and most pilots wouldn't be capable of doing the specialised jobs of "monkeywrenching" their engines, weapons, and shield flux capacitors.

I'd like to be able to switch weapons in space, but this is a different discussion, but related to this "mooring" interface idea.

Alternatively it could just be, if you want to change equipment, go dock. For this to work, requirement to increase dockable size at Docking rings would be to everything.

Commodities:
Buying:
This would be a list of what's on planet.
Selling:
Is dynamic lists possible with FLHook?

Bribes:
Should be easy to make a FLHook list for brides with chances.

Ships:
You could buy a ship hull , with the listed prices.
Upon purchase, you would get booted and your ship replaced, and ID transferred and mounted(?).
You can then log in and your ship is different, & Weps, shields and equipment would be in your hold, unequipped.

With the in space equipping idea as described above, this would be easily fixed.

Cannon have you considered teaching (or at teh very least documenting what you do) other people how to use your things? What would happen if you decide to leave?

We'd probably be screwed.

But yeah, I don't foresee a way around the mounting of guns in space. People would abuse it. You'd have to either have a "drydock" station, much like at shipyards, or dock on a planet. That's the only forseeable way I can see it working for that part.

What happens if an NPC wants to dock with your moor?

And what happens if you want to log out?
