I need to find a freeware/Trial/Purchaseable 3d Animation program. The requirements would be that i could do detailed work, without having to use blobs, circles and cubes. So an effective analogy would be, i need to find the CS4/Paintshop of 3d Artwork/design instead of trying to do things the hard way on a Paint class program.
babylon 5 models are not very detailed when it comes to the model itself. ( if you have the b5 box, there s a "making of" - which shows you that they make mostly use of "normal mapping" and other tricks [ of course ] )
now - if you just wish to have them detailed like that, you can basicly use Gmax 3d - which is free. but i daresay that every modelling program ( that is free ) starts with blobs, circles and cubes. - these are just the essential basic shapes from which you create custom faces.
i do not think you will find anything better for no cash. - there are volumeric scanners ( 3d scnaning ) and programs that can recognize 3d shapes ... but you d need professional equipment for those. ( usually not even software, but its hardware )
when its about "freeware", you are bound to do a lot of stuff manually. - even studiomax 3d autodesk, one of the most advanced and public softwares is "hard work". ( and used by professional game designers, too - at least in early stages ) ..... from what it sounds you need stuff that movie designers can use ( pixar or sci-fi scenes ).
so - in order to make detailed models, you need:
- patience modelling out of basic shapes
- programs that support advanced shaders like up to 2.1 at least ( which you won t get for free, i think )
here is an example:
this is a ship from the game "genesis rising" - a rather simple model that makes heavy use of bumpmapping to achieve details. - but in order to use bumpmapping like that, you ll need experience with texturing. - milkshape can ( in theory ) apply bump maps - but its not too easy. to find some that look exactly the way they look.
im not doing babylon 5 models, i was, as you guessed referring to details. Like i said, i need good programs, i can learn to use em...im not looking for free stuff, i mean if i have to go buy one, i will, its just that i dont want to spend hundreds of dollars on something i will need to get specialized equipment for.
I do game development (programming side for me). But do know a fair few artists most of them prefer to use a combination of pen and paper for basic designs and then SketchUp (from Google), 3DS Max (Autodesk) and Maya (Autodesk). It all comes down to personal preference.
There is a very good open source 3D Rendering program called Blender (www.blender.org). I used it for a while and there are tons to tuts out there for it. It supports lots of filetypes so you would have no trouble importing from other programs (the materials and textures linked to any render you may import may be a bit troublesome though). If you want a good idea of what it is capable go to the gallery on the Blender.org website.

No matter what application you choose it will come with blobs, spheres, cubes and the like. They're what is referred to as basic primitives and are a fundamental to 3d design.
You aren't obligated to use them either, I never box model and rarely use primitives to design my work. I almost always start with a sketch and simply expand from there, and then translate mental to digital. Its going to take time but can be one of the most worthwhile ventures ever.
Haddow has kindly listed some fine applications, but I'll shortlist the most common ones for you. Autodesk 3D Studio Max, Autodesk Maya, Softimage XSI, TrueSpace, Rhino, and there are some more... its late...
